Doubts with spinning reel adquisiton

Hello to everybody,

 

I want to buy a new reel for spinning, I would mainly use for drop shot with braid. Actually I am thinking in Abu Garcia Revo Premier in size 30 because I can buy on sale ?, but I read some issues about this reel, same with Abu Garcia Revo Rocket ... Other options are the Penn Clash in size 2500, I read it is really tough and good reel, or Lew's Metal Crush Speed.

 

Does someone use any of these reels and could give to me any opinion? Any other reel proposal maybe?

Out of what you have listed, I'd go the Abu route, especially if there is a sale.  I'm not sure what issues have been out there, other than the typical anecdotal internet cranks that don't understand the concept of returning defective merchandise, and instead shout from the internet rooftops, lol.

Me, too, like J Francho . . . I'd go with the Abu from those stated choices.

 

I'd add this, not knowing your price target, that you should also consider a Shimano NASCI if around $100 is in the correct range.

 

*Not a good choice if you plan to back reel, but other than that, a nice bang for the buck.

The Premier retails for around $250.  Puts him in CI4, Ballistic, XT land.  The Premier would be a solid choice, if discounted.

3 bad comments does make a reel bad.  You do realize, people are paid to make these reviews, right?  I don't trust any of them.  Wait for some replies here, see what REAL people say about it.

Yes, for sure, that's the reason I posted here. I think Abu Garcia is a good reel brand, but I have been "out of the market" some time, so I prefer to be sure about my adquisition.

Which rod will you pair it with ? My DropShot setup is a 6'10 ML/XF with a Sedona size 1000 reel. Yours are likely higher end but FWIW that's what I'm using.

I have the Lew's Mach Crush Speed Spin size 300 reel.

 

 

Very smooth reel, aluminum frame with the Winn Grip knob. Casts great. The only thing I would change would be the bail wire. I like a thick metal bail wire and this one has the thin wire like my old Shimano's.

 

All that being said I would recommend this reel however not at the full $99 price point. Shop around, find a better deal on E-bay then go to DSG and let them price match it. I have seen this reel on sale for as low as $75 at times. With % codes you can get it cheaper than that.

Ok, thanks a lot for yours comments, here in Spain this reel is much more expensive than in US. So if 75$ is a fair price I will discard since here I have to pay the double for it. ?.

I have a 6-8 MLXF in the Avid, and I use a Stradic CI4.  The Premier is similar and would suit it well.  If you can get to an actual store, and mount it on your rod, that would be the best.  At this price level, we're really just looking for the best feel in your hands.  All the reels are great.

I’ve had the anti-reverse slip issue with my STX30 once or twice and it was cold but it didn’t happen every time. When it did, I had my hand on the handle so it didn’t cause me to lose the fish and it was only for a second and it would reengage. I’d say the temp was in the 40’s. I’ll see if it happens again this winter and if it’s only a grease issue, then I’m sure I could get it cleaned out. Other than that it’s been a great reel and I don’t think it’s much different than the premier and I got it for way less than the $199 msrp on amazon.

At your price point Shimano Stratic Ci4 2500 would be my choice. With braid or bass fishing you don't need a deep spool high line capacity spinning reel.

I have 3 Stratic reels for 10 years without any issues and thinking about updating to Ci4's but it's hard to change when the reels perform so good. I had the same problem when changing from Daiwa TD SS1300 spinning reels, after changing the shaft bushing to a bearing the old SS1300's still run smooth and are bullet proof.

I would aviod Abu reels today. When fishing with my son he uses my  Stradics and I use my old SS1300, feels a little heavy now but  no spinning reel cast better or has a smoother more reliable drag.

At a $200 price point I would go with a Stradic or one of the LT reels from Daiwa like the Tatula or Ballistic. Any of those would be a better bet than the Abu imo.

 

Or better yet go on Ebay and for $200 you can get a Daiwa Luvias 2500 and that will be far and away the best you can get for $200. I have owned several Stradics and fished most of the LT line none of them are as solid of a reel as the Luvias is.

My vote would be a Daiwa Tatula LT 3000 shallow spool version. I have four of them 2-2000, 1-2500 and 1-3000 size

and all are incredible. They preform great with braided line and are super light weight and solid. My 2 cents.

I have a sedona as well and must say I am extremely impressed.  I rarely ever use spinning but felt I needed a couple so I got a Sedona because it was fairly inexpensive and I love it!  I personally am so glad I went that route and saved some money for tackle and put it towards other rods/reels.

@maherme you should consider smaller size reel (size 1000 Shimano's or equivalent other Mfr size) to pair it with a ML. You will cut some total weight at the expense of some stopping power. PS. You have bass in Spain ?

I would (and did) get any of the Daiwa LT series, to suit your budget. I have dipped my toes in many manufacturer's reels over the years and there is considerably less chance for disappointment if you stick to Shimano and Daiwa. I'm not keen on Shimano spinning reels, so I pretty much have all Daiwas now and the LTs from Fuego to Ballistic are all very nice.

Yes we have bass, but only largesmouth bass. But they are smaller than in US, normaly 1-2lb, basses around 4-5lb are rarelly and the Spain récord is about 10lb if I am not wrong.

We also have pikes, and the same as basses, they are smaller.

I agree 100% on the Diawa as 1300 reels. One of the best spinning reels ever. I own and still use a ABU/ Zebco cardinal 4. The only drawback with these now days is their weight. Otherwise , for durability and smoothness, very hard to beat either one.

J Franco, thanks for posting these. Just got home and had a chance to read them. Your reviews are very good. My point in my thread the other day was to point out good and bad points in any review.It could be as small as the handle shape on a spinning reel. No one item is perfect for everyone. Especially more costly tackle items. Again, good job on the reviews!
