dgkasper58 Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I hardly use a spinning rod any more but want to be able to downsize my baits and was probably going to purchase a Gloomis GLX jig and worm rod for weightless texas rigs/ned rig/ other weightless plastics. I was planning on going Braid to fluorocarbon but was not sure how braided line will effect the higher modulus rod with the lighter line rating. I just do not want to overload the rod. Any thoughts? Super User Oregon Native Posted October 23, 2018 Super User Posted October 23, 2018 It's a personnel thing but on my bass spinning rods I pretty much stick with ten pound braid maybe eight in winter and six to twelve pound leader depending on waters fished. I also use a simple double uni and it works well....good luck. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I am weird in that I have fished 8lb mono on my three spinning reels on the Tidal Potomac for 18 years and have never seen a need to change. It never seems to detract from catching bass from the Potomac grass beds. 1 Quote
Hulkster Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I too like 8 and 10 pound mono on my spinning gear (I use Sufix Siege). When I used light braid (10 pound Sufix 832) it cast great etc. but I was getting problems with wind knots, so I switched back to mono. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 23, 2018 Super User Posted October 23, 2018 Set your drag to 1/3 the weakest link in the system, whether that be line, knots strength, or rod. That way, you'll minimize any failures. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted October 23, 2018 Super User Posted October 23, 2018 WInd knots are what happens when braid gets twisted. The solution is the same for twist for any line: troll it out, reel back in using some pressure between your fingers. Quote
Preytorien Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 For spinning I have too many problems when I use mono or fluoro. For that reason I use a light braid, 15lb or so, then add a leader if I feel the need. Tactical Bassin' has me really diggin' the braid to mono leader, it seems to be somewhat illogical, but it really works. 1 Quote
DHP Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I’ve switched back and forth from 20# + leader to straight 8# fluorocarbon. I like the versatility of the braid to use different leaders for different lures, but I’ve had good luck with straight seaguar red label 8# as long as I manually close the bail as soon as my lure hit the water to avoid getting the loops. Maybe a little better slackline sensitivity for the weightless plastics with the fluoro as well. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Just use a lighter lb braid which has a smaller diameter than the equivalent mono/fluoro. I use 10-15lb braid almost across the board on my spinning reels, and use a lighter leader as needed. Quote
