Cold front moved in and I could not find them today. Tried tight to wood, cover, open water. Down sized my baits nothing. Could only manage 2 dinks. Where do you look when the bite gets really tough during a cold front? Staying home is not an option for me as I am addicted and need a fix when available. Thanks for the help.

Wish I could help you.  I went out today and had the same trouble.  Fished the best bass lake in the area and talked to two other boats that got skunked also.  Our problem was bluebird skies and not even a breeze.  I hooked one on an underspin jighead with a paddle tail but my knot broke and the fish left with a jighead in it's mouth.  That makes me feel terrible.  Had two bass charge my frog from thick hydrilla but they both turned away right before the strike.  Too bright out I think.  I have the same problem as you, though.  I'm going out again tomorrow!

I would try deeper and using slow moving baits like a jig or a creature bait. Also try smaller baits and dropshotting a bait. Just my opinion. As for me, I've moved on to dreaming about the spring. I might get one more shot at river smallies if it doesn't rain for the rest of October.

“Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.” At least you got out there, I wish I had some advice to offer. Maybe black and blue jig crawled deep in the channel? Maybe a bottle or two of Miller high life? What kind of water are you fishing? Reservoir, river or natural lake? I just went all Socrates and tried to answer your question with questions . Just look on the bright side you could be stuck in friggin Las Vegas like me, constantly checking fishing reports and longing for home

I had the same luck, except no dinks and one just slapped at my Whopper Plopper first thing Friday morning.

Also, my Lowrance went out and wouldn’t display anything. Then my trolling motor died. Then I was stuck on a sand bar. Then I had trouble starting the outboard.

I went home and took a nap.

I have found this Fall especially difficult.  Seams there is a lot moving and they don't know where they are supposed  to be ?

I look everywhere . High bluebird skies and no breeze sometimes I'll find fish out on the points sometimes in shoreline cover , beaver houses , laydowns...    I just keep plugging away . If slowing down doesnt  work  then I'll cover more water . So many times I  have stumbled on an area that has active bass  .

Same luck today. Cold front came through last night. Shad are all schooled up in the back of inlets and cuts. Right where they are supposed to be. Saw a few small bass, gar, and crappie chase a few around. But overall there was just little action. Talked to a few other boats who also hadn’t caught anything. It’s def been a tough fall so far. Really the only thing consistently biting the last few weeks are small spots

I'll 2nd that.  The past 2 weeks have been humbling.

We had cold front conditions both days of our end of the year fish off this past weekend. Everyone else moved to the main lake and fished slow. Water temps told me they should still be shallow and feeding on shad, and that's where we found them. A bladed jig, flipping jig, and spinnerbait gave us enough fish to win by over 13 pounds.

Today was very windy in my area and it made things difficult for me. What strategies or techniques work best on those really breezy days?

Depends somewhat on how long the wind has been blowing in relatively same direction.  If it is 13mph+ AND a change from yesterday, I just find sheltered areas.  If the direction has been prevailing for more than a couple days, I'll try to deal with it and work windward shores, points, bays, etc.

I got skunked the last two times I was out. Prior to that, I only got skunked 3 times this year!

I think I picked the wrong lakes to fish as I believe they moved a bit deeper as it's getting colder up here, and I had no access to deep parts.

Was so excited about the much hailed Fall Bite. But "I got nothin'..."

Guess it's only for the boiling hot lakes in CA and such, that finally come down to a reasonable temperature.

Upstate NY has been closed for me as soon has we had consecutive cold nights. Looking forward to Florida trip in November...

The fall bite seems to be September and early October up in Western MA and Vermont.

This past week has been tough. I have been getting 1 decent fish a trip. Bluebird skies, air temps in the 40's and gusty winds.

The only things that have worked for me all week were squarebill crankbaits and Z-man TRD Tubez.

I’m in one of those situations right now where there are literally Shad schools everywhere you look. Main lake, rivers, sloughs, etc. I’ve never seen it like this. The bass are spread all over the place. It’s made it tough locating and staying on good fish. Honestly I’ve had more success ignoring the school altogether than finding them pinned to a bank or structure. It’s just crazy

Well, your addiction is a healthy one. You won't find them at home.

I fish small waters, so "finding them" is less an issue. So, it's activity/aggression level that I try to ascertain. Will they chase? Or do I have to... go in there after them??!! The latter doesn't always pan out. I rely on the fish at some level. Probably more than I would like to admit.

Honestly, I haven't "found them" in like 2 years. I keep fishing though, it's fun and you never know when it will pick back up :P
