riverbasser Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 We dont get to decide what the fish want. If they were hitting both equally I'd pick the spinnerbait any day though. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 16, 2018 Global Moderator Posted October 16, 2018 I prefer a bladed jig, but I don't really care what I prefer, I'll fish whichever the fish want. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted October 16, 2018 Global Moderator Posted October 16, 2018 Neither! These are far and away the least two effective fishing lures for me personally. I know they work but I can’t make them. And I fish a several times a week year round . For about 25+ yrs now 1 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 A chatterbait with a Pit Boss trailer has been a great producer for me this year. I even caught a catfish on that setup the other day. Stupid catfish will eat just about anything. Earlier in the year a white spinnerbait with a white Keitech Swing Impact was my top producer. I'll probably go back to it in a few weeks if the water down here ever cools off. Quote
Big Rick Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 My favorite fishing holes are filled with cypress trees, stumps, and knees. That makes fishing a bladed jig very frustrating as they will hang up on EVERYTHING that they brush against. So, I try a spinnerbait first. If it's a no-go I'll pursue a paddle tail swimbait before I resort to trying a bladed jig. Now, if the fish are out in the open, it's on with the bladed jig. I can fish it faster and deeper which allows me to cover lots more water to find the fish. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 I throw both and let the fish decide. Right now small spinnerbait slow, and yoyoing chatter have been good. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 Definitely Spinnerbaits for me - Late Summer & Early Fall. Mid Fall sees more vibrating jigs - especially recently. A-Jay Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 I throw a spinnerbait year round ? 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 Yes, I fish when the water is wet. 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 Spinnerbait for me too Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 Time and place. Spinner baits fell out of favor with me a while back as I discovered bladed jigs, swim jigs, and other stuff. But recently, I have been using all three in various situations and have been very pleased with how well spinner baits still catch them. 1 Quote

I have the same problem, fish at least 3 times a week. I’m going to assume now (thanks to all this evidence ha!) that these just aren’t effective on our waters, and it’s not me that’s at fault. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 Spinner baits, bladed jigs and swim jigs are always in my rotation when searching for active fish. The fish get to decide which one I stick with that day. Quote

Yea I live in Knoxville. Unfortunately I think it is indeed you and I that are at fault! Hahaha 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 I'll start off with a chatterbait. A lot of the small lakes and ponds by me get hammered with spinnerbaits. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted October 16, 2018 Super User Posted October 16, 2018 Usually spinnerbait for clearer water and chatterbait if the water is murky. Quote

I do the opposite! (...which suggests to me the two may actually be mostly interchangeable --- I don't care, though, they're both a lot of fun when the bite is on) Quote

Not saying I don't catch fish on spinnerbait in murky water, and vice-versa. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted October 17, 2018 Super User Posted October 17, 2018 I usually have better luck with a Sworming Hornet underspin and a small swim bait than either a spinner bait or chatter bait. 1 Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 If I'm going to fish either it is usually going to be a chatter bait. I feel like it goes through grass better along the bottom and you can vary the retrieve more than a spinnerbait. Don't get me wrong though, I know a spinnerbait works and I've caught many fish on them. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 17, 2018 Super User Posted October 17, 2018 I think it depends where I'm fishing. I know a lot of people have caught more fish on a chatterbait than any other, but up here in the northeast (at least at places I fish somewhat regularly), catching fish on a chatterbait is just one step from catching leprechauns in Ireland. At the closest lake to me with bass, I have caught a few bass but a ton of chain pickerel on a spinnerbait. On the next closest lake with fishing access Massachusetts, I don't believe I have ever caught anything on a spinnerbait. Crankbaits however are quite effective at both of these lakes. However at most of the lakes I've fished up in Vermont and some other lakes in Massachusetts, I have made a killing fishing with spinnerbaits, including my PB. There were a couple of days where I couldn't get a bite on anything until I decided to throw a spinnerbait, hoping the flash would attract them and finally got a fish. Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted October 20, 2018 Super User Posted October 20, 2018 I have better luck with Spinnerbaits,So I throw them more. But I really like the Rage blade.Im going to work it in the mix more. Quote
nosdog2 Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Spinnerbait run along late fall docks is a winner. Quote

For about 25+ yrs now I can relate. It was 14 years ago I tried spinnerbaits and signed off on them but something for me changed this year. I couldn’t keep them off. I convinced myself that the bass in my area simply weren’t tuned into them. And to boot, the stingiest bass lake, my home lake, where it’s tough by default from the shore (houses surround 90% of the lake) gave up the ghost. So so even if it’s been 25 years to my 14, don’t sign off on them. All it means is the necessary adjustments (color, blade size, blade type possibly just a few to mention) to crack their puzzle have yet to be put together. To the topic, spinnerbait I say. Only have one chatterbait and it’s misplaced and so I’m still a chatter bait virgin. They are on my list of lures to add to the “caught a bass with it” list. Quote
