wapsi smallmouth Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Hi all, I am trying to choose between two rods for a new spinnerbait rod. 7'-1" MH/MF Veritas or 7ft M/F Ike Power series rod I've gone and checked both rods out and I like the tip on the Ike rod better, but I do a lot of fishing around heavy cover and I am kinda afraid it may not have the power I need sometimes. Just wondering if anyone has some experience with these rods. I would also probably be throwing chatter baits on it as well. Mainly shallow as well so 3/8 or 1/2 oz. Quote

MH is a better all around rod and can be used for pretty much anything. My spinnerbaits rod is MH/F 1 Quote

My current spinnerbait rod is a 6'10 MH/F aetos that's like 80backbone/20tip and I feel like a miss a few fish because of that Quote
greentrout Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 most of my presentations with a spinnerbait are with 1/4 oz. sb 6'6" med. fast rod 12lb. mono...go higher mh rod is used... good fishing... Quote

If your fishing around cover I would go with Mh. Or the potential for big bass I use Mh Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 You're relying too heavily on the designations. MH etc varies between makes and models. The ABU rods lean toward the more stout side. Look more at the lure weight range and pick something that will load and cast well. 2 Quote
LionHeart Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 IMO that Veritas is too stout for a good spinner bait rod (heavy cover or no heavy cover). I have no experience with the Ike rod whatsoever, so Can't be much help there. Quote
Big Rick Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 I have 3 Veritas that I use for spinnerbaits and small topwater plugs. They all are 7' Medium with a fast tip and work beautifully. There is just enough parabolic bend to prevent the bass from throwing the lure yet enough backbone to allow me to land fish up to 7 pounds thus far. I actually have 7 Veritas of different ranges and lengths and they are nearly bulletproof. Like a Timex, they take a licking and keep on ticking. Quote
CroakHunter Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 I throw 3/8 and 1/2 spinners and chatters on a 7ft heavy daiwa fuego. On those baits you have a big jig hook to sink into a moving bass's mouth. I like more power with a fast tip. So I would get the veritas. Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 I would lean toward the MH/MF rod, I personally like a rod with a MF action for moving lures like spinner baits, chatter baits and swim jigs....etc Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 18, 2018 Super User Posted October 18, 2018 For a 1/2oz spinnerbait, you will want to go with a MH rod. M/F is good for 3/8oz and lighter spinnerbaits. Some prefer a MH/MF rod because the little extra play in the tip helps you not pull the bait out of the fish's mouth before they get it in their mouth, but MH/F will also work just fine. My favorite rod for spinnerbaits is a 7'2" Daiwa Tatula Glass MH/R (MF) rod. It has enough backbone to set the hook on a spinnerbait, but it has enough additional flex to fish a crankbait as well. 1 Quote
BigShew2 Posted October 18, 2018 Posted October 18, 2018 I am currently using a 6'9" mh/f Veritas 2.0 as my spinnerbait/chatterbait rod. It has been really good paired with a Revo S 6.4:1. It has got me two of my biggest bass this year. Two me the rod does feel a little more stout, but the tip is soft enuf to make accurate casts from the yak. Just my 0.02. Quote
Super User burrows Posted October 18, 2018 Super User Posted October 18, 2018 I think you’ll do just fine with mhf I have a mhmf mojo 7 foot and I find the moderate action to be burdensome to me trying to get threw cover or using a half once spinner bait with a trailer seems the tip has to much give. I think I rather personally go with a bit stouter rod next time I’m in the market for a spinnerbait rod. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Wrong response, subject is spinnerbait rods and not spinning rods. KVD had a great 7' MH spinnerbait rod he designed for Quantum a number of years ago, which I found on sale at BPS back then. He really knew what he was doing when he came up with this one. Not sure if they still sell it. Quote
