So now that my 2018 fishing season is likely over, I am looking at upgrading my tackle storage (and increasing the size a bit too). I currently use a tackle bag full of 3650 trays, and I have to rotate certain lures in and out of it.

I was looking at getting the Bass Mafia Blade Coffin for spinnerbaits and jigs, the jerkbait coffin for jerkbaits and topwater but what I am not sure about is what I should do for crankbaits. I could get the Bass Mafia Cranking Coffin, but since I fish far more shallow divers than deep dirvers, would I be better off with the 3700DD, or getting the Cranking Coffin which would fit my deep divers as well?

Thanks in advance.

I keep cranks 0-10 ft in a 3700 deep plano box, and then 10+ in a separate 3700 deep plano.   The 3700 deep holds a ton of cranks, divided by running depth and color.

For our anniversary, my wife bought me the Lure Lock "Lure Locker". It gives me 5 trays to sort crankbaits by depth/style plus no more tangled trebles.

Thanks! I was largely concerned with the crankbait coffin being a little deep and potentially awkward with smaller cranks, but honestly I'd rather start there and once I need more storage, then pickup a 3700dd for shallow divers and organize them that way.

Always keep your shoes on! The best lures get the preferential treatment and are dangling from the center console

In your boat especially!

Personally, I keep my lures really well organized.

But what do those of us that like to go barefoot do?

Tread lightly ! I actually fish barefoot a lot when it’s not too hot and have somehow never caught myself. I did flip a canoe this summer and retained both my rods only because the jitterbug tied to one of the rods was stuck in my toe and the other rod was tangled all up in the line. Had to rip the hook out underwater because we were swimming through rapids with a swamped boat........ ouchie

I really enjoy fishing cranks, I really hate untangling hooks.  After seeing this thread I went and bought the Bass Mafia Bait Coffin, deep........I can fit 48 cranks in there, a couple less since my deep divers take up two slots.  But I can put the in a slot, nose first and hang a hook over the divider to make it easier to get them out.  One per slot, no tangled hooks.

I hate spending that kind of money on a utility box but this was well worth it.  Used it on my fishing outing today and loved it.

Thanks! Are 1.5s and 2.5s easily accessible as well?

Yes, Like I said, I put them in nose first, hang one hook on the back treble over the divider so you can grab it easily.  Today I was out in the kayak with it on it's side, wanted to switch up since the color I was using wasn't working, reached back and grabbed the box out of my crate and when I opened it up everything was just how I left it.  Should have bought it sooner.  The downside is now I see myself buying more Bass Mafia boxes......lol

Okay I wasn't sure if you meant smaller ones or all of them that way. Good tip, thanks! I'm sold.

Going to buy the jerkbait and blade coffins as well.

Only bigger deep divers wouldn't fit in a single slot, so I had to remove a couple of dividers to get them in but it's still all good because there are so many slots!

Looks like I need to invest in some? I separate cranks into several categories. First is wakes 0-2', second 2-5', third 3-6', fourth 5-8', fifth 6-10', and over 10'. I know several baits cross into different categories but I usually write the depths with a sharpie on each bait if I do not fish them regularly. Honestly I need a better tackle management system as every time I try to pull out a crank 6 others are tangled with it.

I have a crankbait box that stores two per slot. The smaller ones tend to refrain from tangling sometimes, but it's guaranteed with a medium or larger sized crankbait. At least it's only two but the problem is that I'd like to expand my arsenal.

I also fish from a kayak and have been using the Plano 3700 Deep. However, as you can see from the picture, I have to play the game when trying to take out just one bait. I've been looking at that Bass Mafia 3700 Deep as a solution for some time now, but my concern is if it is truly waterproof/water tight. I know the Plano is and it also floats, even when loaded with baits. I can not find any reviews stating that the Bass Mafia box floats. I guess I could go ahead and drop the coin on the Bass Mafia and test it myself and them use the return label if it doesn't pass. I really do like how the Bass Mafia box organizes baits.

Sounds like you just need me to pick through your collection and lighten your load a bit..........

I had whole boxes exactly like that of cranks and jerks that I left out in the sun and they all swolled and busted and warped. That’s why I just keep them laying around singly now hahaha

I probably would bring a smaller waterproof box with me on a kayak/canoe anyway. I have some waterproof boxes that I load up before each trip, works pretty well!

Wrap those hooks up :D it will help you with pulling 1 out at a time.

I wrap my hooks together with rubber bands and can store a bunch without the dividers in the regular Plano boxes without tangling together.

Learned it on an In-Fisherman episode and easily cut the number of boxes needed in half.

I think the deep casket 3700 are gonna be the best Option, the deep coffins are good but you can’t see your baits?

Posted

The problem with the deep casket is there aren't as many slots so if you want one crank per slot it's not going to hold many.
