Jagz Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 (edited) Just started fishing this summer. Picked up Lund WC 14 with a 15HP Honda 4 stroke. I plan to do some upgrades and mods Want to start with a TM and a FF Thinking Minn Kota Power Drive 55# and a Garmin Striker Plus 7cv Thoughts? Comment? Recommendations? Super User slonezp Posted October 13, 2018 Super User Posted October 13, 2018 Powerdrives are problematic. More specifically the foot pedals corrode and short out. Were you to get a Powerdrive, go with the Ipilot model as it has a hand remote rather than a foot pedal. Otherwise, if you want electric steer with a foot pedal I would highly recommend upgrading to a Terrova. As far as the graph. Head into one of the big box stores and play around with the graphs in your price range. Compare the features and ease of use, and then make a final decision. 1 1 Quote
Jagz Posted October 13, 2018 Author Posted October 13, 2018 Ipilot is an expensive upgrade. Is it overkill for a 14 ft tinny? Quote
tander Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 I use a 55# MK Edge on my 17 foot aluminum boat and it does the job for me. I would stay with a cable operated trolling motor. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 14, 2018 Super User Posted October 14, 2018 Can't help with your boat question, those with expertise will, as above. But welcome aboard to Bass Resource! Quote

If you google powerdrive problems, you will see issues over and over going back to the foot pedal. Are you leaning towards electric steer for a reason? You can use a cable steer as mentioned above or, MK also makes a hand control "tiller" for the bow Quote
Jagz Posted October 14, 2018 Author Posted October 14, 2018 i think I would like to have control from the front or the back of the boat. I like the idea of 18ft range of the pedal. What about Xi3? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 14, 2018 Super User Posted October 14, 2018 Haven't heard anything bad about it. I've never owned a Motorguide Quote
jbmaine Posted October 14, 2018 Posted October 14, 2018 We had a Lund WC Delux for many years. Good stable boat. I assume you are putting some kind of casting deck on the front? Quote

I think I will just put a floor in between the bench seats for now. That's why I thought the power drive would work well. With the 18ft cord I can just put the peddle on the floor where I am sitting. Jumping up to an iplot with the remote would work too but......$$ Quote

As for FF, I like Garmin but you should look for yourself to see what suits you. As for your Honda, keep it maintained and they are pretty much bullet proof. 1 Quote

The previous owner installed a solid Aluminum plate at the bow that will be perfect for my TM. I think he had an anchor unit mounted up there. Quote

Super User gim Posted October 15, 2018 Super User Posted October 15, 2018 A co-worker of mine has a boat similar to that (different brand). He has a bow mounted hand control TM and it works well for that kind of small aluminum, non-bass boat. He's had it for a while so I'm not sure what model it is, but it is a minn kota. Quote

I like the idea of 18ft range of the pedal. What about Xi3? My opinion is that the Xi3 is junk. My dad has an Xi3 with the wireless footpedal. He had his Edge sold before he really got to play with the Xi3 and has stated several times he regrets getting the Xi3. I have used it on his boat and honestly I hated it. I would rather have a cable drive without the pinpoint any day. The problem is that the wireless footpedal is not reliable AND it is more like a button than a pedal. In other words, it doesn’t seem to be pressure sensitive. Finally, the thing doesn’t respond well. Sometimes it will keep turning after you release the pedal. It is extremely difficult to navigate. The hand remote doesn’t seem to have any problems, but if I’m fishing I want big hands for my rod. If it were my boat that thing would be off in a heartbeat. I would pay money not to use the Xi3 with the wireless footpedal. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 If the boat's going to have other people in it it might be awkward going to the front of the boat to deploy the bow mount every time in a relatively small boat. You could easily get a transom mounted trolling motor and turn the head on it round, then fish "backwards. It saves climbing over everyone to get the TM down and works reasonably well. I used the system on my previous boat. Much cheaper to buy a transom mount than a bow mount too. 1 Quote

Put it down from the rear then use the remote anywhere in the boat. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 The Minn Kota Ulterra would be your ideal solution, but probably cost more than the boat. It deploys and retracts itself and has a remote to steer it as well as deploy and retract it, but I think they're around $3k. Quote
