Super User FishTank Posted February 2, 2022 Super User Posted February 2, 2022 I use to use grease but switched to oil years ago. It only took one tear down of a heavily used reel with braid that had grease on the worm gear for me to realize that the potential for junk to build up in the corners of the frame is around 100%. I was then convinced by DVT that this was the way to go. It has worked great for me since. 1 Quote
BayouSlide Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 I use a little Yamalube marine gear oil, leftover from outboard oil change. Quote
cyclops2 Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 I only open & re oil if I water soak a reel somehow. Very rare since I only take 2 rods at most on the boat. 1 if on foot. Yes !! I dropped it off the dock !!!! Quote

It is just the right thickness , offers great protection and stays put real well . I found it doesn't get dirty very fast - but if need be spray the worm gear down with WD4 with straw adapter to clean then re-apply the fresh gear oil . Quote
