NathanDLTH Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 I like straight flouro or braid to leader. If I’m running flouro it’s 17-20, braid to leader goes 40-50 to 17-20. In off chance I’m running straight braid then it’s more than likely 50lb braid. I’m finding if I’m running a mod/Fast or mod action rod that I like braid to leader better or straight braid chatterbait and spinnerbaits. Quote

Mr Swim Jig Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 I use 12# or 15# fluorocarbon for chatterbaits... Quote
J.Vincent Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 50lb braid is almost always overkill for chatterbaits, even a 5 or 6lb largemouth is tamed with 17lb mono. Also the only way a chatterbait can effectively be thrown on 50lb braid is with a composite rod; and this is just not ideal , as it changes the action of the lure when it pulls free from vegetation. On monofilament or copolymer, a chatterbait will snap free and pop forward erratically because of the added stretch. When fishing chatterbaits to emulate a fleeing or stressed baitfish , the added stretch is crucial. This is how I fish and it's the way I encourage others to fish this lure. ModFast with Monofilament is king in 99% of situations . But of course, do what works best for you and your specific fishing conditions ! 1 1 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted October 12, 2018 Super User Posted October 12, 2018 I have thrown a lot of chatterbaits on 15lb fluorocarbon this year. Last year, I used mostly 40lb braid, usually straight but I have also used 15lb mono, 17lb mono and my oldest son uses 15lb copoly. Generally, any line should work with a chatterbait as long as it's got enough strength (15-20lb depending on conditions). I switched to fluorocarbon for crankbaits, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits and in many places it works well because it lets me get down in the water column. I usually fish from shore though, and many of the shore locations I fish from are shallow so in this case, I would prefer mono for the shallower locations Quote
