Usmcjon Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 I have a Garmin Striker plus 9sv as my bow unit. My depth readings are way off on sonar. I'm in 4-5ft of water and its reading 30+ feet. I'm also getting hard bottom at the very top of my screen. The trolling motor is an older Minn kota edge. Any advice on how to correct is appreciated in advance.. set on auto-med. Noise reject is off. Have on chirp setting at 455Khz. Quote
Russ E Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Nearly all fish finders can get funky in shallow water. My hummingbird helix does that occasionally in shallow water. often times it is in 3 ft or less and reads 15-20ft. it usually happens when transitioning back and forth from soft to hard bottom. It seems to get confused. It usually eventually stabilizes and starts reading correct again. A couple thing you can try in shallow water, that may or may not help: 1: turn on the noise filter. 2: turn down the sensitivity. 3: if it is available switch to a lower frequency on the transducer. 4: if there is a clear or max mode switch over to clear mode. 5: if there is a sonar at the helm shut it off. sometimes two sonars bouncing around under the boat,in shallow water, can give weird readings. 6: I used to have an old lowrance that could not read shallow water in auto mode. I had to set the max depth at 10ft. to get accurate readings. Quote
Usmcjon Posted October 5, 2018 Author Posted October 5, 2018 I gotcha. That's one thing that I did was turn off my dash unit and was still doing the same thing. Went to an area of the lake where it 15-20ft deep and it was still way off. The depth was blinking and I was getting vertical blue bars going down my screen using traditional sonar in classic white. Super User NHBull Posted October 5, 2018 Super User Posted October 5, 2018 Make sure you are shutting off the unit at the unit and not just cutting off power at the console. These behave more like our laptops and processing speed can be an issue Quote

I had this happen on my Lowrance a couple weeks ago in 10 feet of water and discovered I had accidentally turned off the auto-range and had locked the depth at 30ft. It was trying to show me the bottom and another bottom below that. Quote
Usmcjon Posted October 6, 2018 Author Posted October 6, 2018 NHBull. I am turning it off at the unit. Quote
