Matt_3479 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I’m new to jig fishing this year and have been super unsuccessful with it and stopped fishing it early on. Just this weekend I came across a good deal on a new glx 894c and grabbed it for a “new jig rod” when I don’t even jig fish lol. I had 3 or 4 jigs in the box so tied one on and threw a kinky beaver trailer on. Third cast I stuck a beauty 4.75lber and the cast right afterwards I stuck another 3lber! I now really want to improve my jig fishing and wondering what jigs are your favorite? How do you fish them? Any colour recommendations? 1 1 Quote

Derek1 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I don’t have any info for you but that’s awsome. The worst part is you stuck two nice fish right away and now you got the bug bad. 1 Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 You really can get away with 2 colors: black/blue (murky water) Some kind of green/natural (finesse, clear, or cold water) This should be able to cover your bases like 80% of the time. 1 Quote
Dens228 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I was in the same situation as you and made this the summer of jigs. After trying a bunch I settled on 6th Sense, their swimjig and their hybrid, both in 3/8 oz. As said above, I go with Black/blue and a natural color in both. I figured keeping it simple by narrowing my choice on the water would help and it did. I'd say my top 10 bass this summer were all on a jig with either a crawfish or paddletail trailer. Quote

So then after narrowing it down you found the same results, black and blue in murky water or cloudy days, and natural on sunny or clear? What kind of paddletail do you use as a trailer? Quote

For the most part I follow those rules........but.............I'm not afraid to switch it up if I'm not getting fish and it has worked out well. More so using the dark in clear water than the other way around. I don't think the bass around here have been reading the articles. I use Keitech and Biospawn paddletails. I'm actually really liking the Biospawn. 1 Quote
GReb Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Get a few football heads and flipping/brush heads. Black/blue, green, and one with orange. 3/8 and 1/2 oz. That would be a good start. I don’t tinker with jig colors much. But I keep a wide array of trailers on hand in both action and colors. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Go with wire wrapped skirts. And trim the weed guards to where they just cover the barb when pushed over hook. If it’s too long you’ll miss fish Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 2, 2018 Super User Posted October 2, 2018 It's been awhile since bass fishing in Ontario lakes and bass anglers were few and far between. I fished several lakes around Nestor Falls and Kenora; Lake of The Woods, Crow lake and a few fly in lakes. What I learned was smallmouth rarely located in or under cover preferring rock structure and LMB rarely located outside of cover, preferring inside weed lines. 4 lb bass, smallie or LMB was a big bass, 6 lb a trophy size. The primary baitfish was yellow perch and bluegill, didn't run across many crawdads. I would suggest 3/8 oz Arkie style jig with sunfish colors that included yellow/orange high lights, 3" to 4" green pumpkin soft plastic trailer. Mail order direct from Siebert Outdoors. Tom 2 Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I really like NorthStar Baits jigs, I keep it pretty simple with colors and sizes. I use a Knockout Series Flipping Jig, Black Series Football Jig, Black Series Alien Jig, Southpaw Jig(grass type jig), Flip & Swim Jig and a Hair Jig. I have a jig problem according to the wife...lol I use to buy all sorts of colors and every color that looked cool when I first started fishing jigs and quickly learned to simplify it and it helped my jig fishing tremendously. Colors I use are Black and Blue, PB&J(brown with some purple), Brown Craw(brown with some orange) and Rotten Banana(kind of a green color). Sizes I use are 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4oz, I do have a couple 1oz but very rarely use them. Trailers you can pretty much use anything you like, 99% of the time I match the trailer to the jig. I use double tail grubs, single tail grubs, craw chunks, craw style trailers, beaver style baits, swim baits....etc there really is nothing that you can't use for a jig trailer. As for trailer size it is one giant ongoing experiment as is what size jig to use. The fish will let you know if you are the right path. Enjoy fishing jigs and welcome to the jig fishing family....lol 1 Quote
gilkeybr Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I recently got a couple of these jigs and really like them. They are a "football head", but have a fairly flat bottom so they skip well in my experience. Also, they seem to get through grass decently. I'd say they are a good "do anything" jig https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Missile_Jigs_Ikes_Head_Banger_Football_Jig/descpage-MBIHB.html Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted October 2, 2018 Super User Posted October 2, 2018 You should also add the PB&J color. I use a twin tail grub or a Zoom ultra vibe speed craw for a trailer. I match my trailer color to the jig. Usually just drag them along slowly. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I use a brand of jigs that apparently have run afoul of the BR censors but they're really good and if you want to PM me I'll get you more information. Seibert does make some good jigs too and Mike is a pleasure to deal with. Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 I don't always throw a jig when I fish, but when I do I throw a Siebert Dredge Jig. https://www.siebertoutdoors.com/Dredge-G2-Jig-489.htm 1 1 Quote
Fishin Dad Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 ^^^^^^That is classic funny up there. I also love the Sieberts dredge dock rocker jig. Fantastic jigs. 1 Quote
Matt_3479 Posted October 3, 2018 Author Posted October 3, 2018 Well I’d love to find those seibert jigs in Canada cause to order them, pay the exchange then duty and shipping it’s going be pricey to order right from them Quote
evilcatfish Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 I find 3/8oz arky head and 1/2oz football heads cover most of my jig fishing needs. I really don't think you can go wrong on color as long as you have confidence in it Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 3, 2018 Super User Posted October 3, 2018 I usually use Booyah or Strike Kings with a weedguard. Use white or white and chartreuse for clear water, and darker colors like brown for murkier water (even if just slightly murky). Quote
Matt_3479 Posted October 8, 2018 Author Posted October 8, 2018 Just picked up a bunch of strike kings, dirty jigs and ordered a dozen seirbert jigs to try! Quote
