Popeye Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Well, I bought and used a Malibu Mini-X kayak last weekend and it was OK, but not nearly enough room OR stable enough to stand in. I'd say that even if I put outriggers on it, it's just not wide enough for standing fishing. I found the Nu Canoe site and was wondering if anyone has one of the 10 or 12 foot versions?? IF so, how stable are they?? They look like they would "fit the bill" for a solo fisherman who wanted a lite kayak type boat that's fairly spacious and stable! Thanks guys!! PS: I also got real wet in the Mini-X and literally had to sit on a water soaked seat all day. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 10, 2008 Super User Posted March 10, 2008 Don't know any thing about those but check this sight out. www.castlecraft.com Quote
Popeye Posted March 10, 2008 Author Posted March 10, 2008 Yep, I liked the Water Bike too. Too bad it's so expensive:o( I just ordered and paid for a 10' Nu Canoe. I think it's going to be way better for fishing than the Mini-X since it's 42" wide and in the videos it appears to be VERY stable with lots of room to stand up. I may or may not order outriggers for it. Quote
Super User Marty Posted March 10, 2008 Super User Posted March 10, 2008 Well, this picture on their site is intended to convey a picture of stability if it's for real. I can't tell for sure if the center of the canoe in the middle running lengthwise is lower than the rest of the boat. If so, you'd have to stand with your legs spread further apart than you might like. It does look roomy, though. Expect it not to paddle efficiently because of its width, but that's not necessarily a bad thing depending on what you want to do with it. Quote
Popeye Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 Marty and the rest of the guys: I am getting real excited about getting my 10' Nu Canoe!! My Boss is giving me a 12V trolling motor to use for propulsion to and from where I want to fish (of course I'll still have my carbon kayak paddle with me for positioning and emergencies if they arrise:o) I have been DROOLING over the Nu Canoe website the last 2 days. I have also emailed them twice already this morning and am waiting on a response for a couple of questions I had. One was the dimensions of the moveable seat. I think I can attach a flush or small riser swiveling mount to it and install a nice padded seat for comfort! I also am looking at the outrigger solution to making the boat ROCK SOLID stable for standing and moving around safely and comfortably. Heck, I am even considering buying one of those inflatable pontoon boats and attaching the pontoons to each side of the Nu Canoe. That should make it a great smallish fishing platform which can all be easily carried in my Ford Explorer Sport. I could also just buy a 2 tube float tube and use the pontoons off that. I am going to wait until I get the Nu Canoe and fish out of it before I go through all the hassle and expense of adding elaborate outriggers/stabilizers since it might not even need them. I have watched the videos on their website and the boats DO APPEAR to be very stable and easily paddled or pushed around with a trolling motor. I doubt I'll get mine by this weekend but should have it one day next week:o) The carrying capacity for the 10' is 450 pounds!! Now I need to do some trolling motor battery research. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure what kind of trolling motor the Boss is giving me but he said he only used it to power a rubber raft a few times and used a tractor battery to do it. PS: if that cutout lower section that is seen in the bottom of the Nu Canoe is as wide as I'm guessing, I'll be able to stand there easily since I wear a size 7 shoe:o) Quote
