Big_Easy_Bassin Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 As my rod and reel arsenal grows, I’ve been looking into some specific rods for a few of my techniques. One will be strictly a lipless crankbait rod. Looking for something around 7’3”. Nothing shorter than 7’. I mostly throw 1/4oz SK RES, but I also use 1/2oz on occasion. I also like the original trap when they like a fast paced, steady retrieve and I only use the 1/2oz. I would prefer a medium heavy action bc I like the backbone for fishing grass and submerged cover, so a 1/4oz-3/4oz or 1/4oz-1oz rating seems about right. Either a moderate or moderate fast action. Just a little bit of give in the tip to avoid pulling hooks. My main concern is the weight of the rod. I’m normally making super long casts and burning it back trying to find fish and usually once I find them I just keep throwing it bc I have so much confidence in it. Needless to say, I’m looking for the lightest rod I can get away with. Thanks in advance for any opinions. Looking forward to seeing some of y’all’s recommendations. Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted September 30, 2018 Super User Posted September 30, 2018 I know this goes against the whole "technique" thing here, but I throw 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 lipless CBs on three different rods, cause that's what works for me, and none are cranking specific rods, as a matter of fact, I throw each lure on a different rod depending on whether I'm around grass, riprap, etc. A 7' MH Fast leaning a bit to mod will fit the bill (I made a funny...) to throw a lipless in most situations though. YMMV, (but it won't) 3 Quote

I started experimenting with 15# and 17#. I think 15# is the sweet spot I like. @reason I’m currently using a 7’ MH/F. It’s rated for 1/4oz-1oz. I would just like a little bit more of that parabolic bend. Anyone have any experience with carbon fiber rods? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 30, 2018 Super User Posted September 30, 2018 I have two of these - This IS My 1/2 RED rod. I do not throw the smaller bait but you'll be good. https://www.tackledirect.com/quantum-tkvd706mb-tour-kvd-pt-cranking-rod.html A-Jay Quote
Backroad Angler Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 For my lipless cranks/ shallow diving cranks I throw them on a dobyns fury FR 705CB paired up with a Lews BB1. Absolutley love this set up for cranks and I can bomb the lures 1/4 and up a mile away! Also have used it for trolling and have caught some decent stripers with it. Good luck with your search buddy! If you wanted to go up a little more in price, I'm sure the champion/sierra models have great crankbait sticks, I just have no experience with them. Quote
Somd Fx4 Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 x2 for Dobyns Fury. I have a Shimano Canaen 150 on it. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 1, 2018 Global Moderator Posted October 1, 2018 I use a Dobyn's Fury 703C for what you're doing. It's light enough to fish the 1/4 oz, does great with the 1/2oz, has enough backbone to rip the bait out of the grass and clear the hooks, and has a nice bend when a big fish is loaded onto it. Mine is paired with a KK Assassin and 15lb Big Game. 1 Quote
anderb54 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 What's you budget like? I have a Destroyer Javelin that I use for lipless baits, and it's awesome at that job. Quote

Not that I’m cheap, but the top end of my budget would be about half of what TW is charging. Lately I’ve been in the $150-$180 range for a rod. With this being a rod I know will get used all the time... I would consider going into the $250 range. Quote
