NY Salmon River- What gear?

So my buddies and I want to take a trip up for Salmon on Thursday, but im not sure if the gear I have is going to be strong enough for some of the fish you could potentially run into. I only have spinning tackle, and just wondering what rod and line (lb test) you'd recommend?

Most guys are using a “noodle rod”; usually 8ft+, light and slow action, with 8-15lb test. In some cases you may want to tie on an even lighter leader. They can get picky at times. Load up on a bunch of different color egg sacks at one of the local shops and you should be in business. Keep changing colors. They can get on one color for an hour, and another color an hour later. And try not to spot hop all day. If you get into good water, just be patient and stay there for a while. Many days the fish will keep moving up throughout the day.

Look at getting a rod that is 8"6" long or longer-  Cheap ones are the 9ft ugly sticks.  Usually 12-17lb test main line.  3000-4000 size reel.  Hooks size 2 or smaller.  You need good strong hooks.  Split shot weights-  Remember you can't buy lead split shot in NY. Life vest would be a good idea- mandatory on Oswego River.  Bait- go with salmon egg imitations until you catch and then use skein.  Waders and korkers another good idea.  There will be plenty of people around.  Don't be afraid to ask questions- some of them are very helpful.  Also there are a couple of shops up there that will take care you.

I've seen a lot of people targeting salmon on their M/F bass rods and they seem to do just fine. I've seen others using a catfish/carp rod as well.

I would stop in at Fat Nancy's or All Season's and get a proper egg sac rod.  Usually around 9-12' long, medium power, moderate action.  You don't have to spend a ton - you'll know when you have one on!  Shimano Convergence are a decent rod for not much cash.  There's no stopping even a 10lb. king's initial run, so make sure the reel you use has a good drag.  You can get away with a typical 7' medium bass rod, but you'll lose some.  Personally, I have a 15' centrepin setup for salmon.  That's probably way too much investment for a weekend trip.  I generally use 12# main and shot line, and a 10# fluoro leader.  Some guys are using braid, as long as the temps are above freezing.  Above all, have fun, and good luck!.
