Topwaterdude Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Any disadvantage to using big hook on smaller soft plastic? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 Depending on the bait & or the presentation / technique, supersizing hooks in plastic can have a tendency to alter some of the baits 'action'. However, as long as one is still getting bit and is utilizing gear that can drive it home, may not matter. A-Jay 3 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 Yup. You don't get the action from soft plastics like swimbaits and soft jerkbaits. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 Stick baits I use a 2/0 ewg because it's the smallest hook I can reliably hook up with. When punching I use the biggest hook that will fit the plastic. Dropshot I tried small hooks and I loose them more so I play with the size based on what will land the fish. Never a simple answer in fishing. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 The hook size I use depends on the bait I am using. Example being there is no reason to use a 5/0 EWG hook with a 4" senko as it will kill the action. Honestly I use a lot of 2/0 hooks and have caught many 6lb+ fish on them for creature baits and senkos. Do not think you can only catch big fish or will gut hook them using smaller hooks. Topwaterdude Posted September 26, 2018 Author Posted September 26, 2018 I'm using a 5/0 Ewg on a Zoom uvibe speed worm,I figured bigger hook would increase hookup perecentage but I think it might be effecting the presentation. Quote

Can you give a recommendation on a 5/0 EWG Worm Hook that is NOT a heavy style flipping type. I'm going to be using them on 5"&6" GY Senkos. I do not fish real real heavy. I rig them weightless t style. Just don't like the heavier hooks I'm using. I think they are overkill. OP, Thanks for for letting me ask a question on your post. Quote

OP, Thanks for for letting me ask a question on your post. On a 5" senko I use 3, 4 or 5.0 Gamakatsu EWG. Not the Superline series which are the thicker flipping hooks. I use the different hook sizes to get a faster/slower fall rate and to compensate for wind or tide. I have no problem rigging with these hooks and none affect the action of the bait. I would say that with a 6" senko I would not use anything below a 4.0. 1 1 Quote

I'd like to get something a bit different to have in my possession for Sunday morning. Gonna break away from the 3" & 4" Senkos I've been using. Step it up a bit. Probably won't find 5/0 EGW locally but feel good about getting them to the house by Sunday delivered. I'm not hurting for fishing tackle or rods and reel by any means but this winter I'm gonna hook myself up with a decent flipping and pitching set up to handle heavier rigs properly. I feel good about a finesse approach to 5" & 6" Senkos but need the right hook. OP THANKS AGAIN. Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 Today's hook technology they're all good, Trokar, Owner, VMC, Gamakatsu, Mustad. 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 I have had far better results with standard offset worm hooks. EWG is reserved for larger diameter baits. Superline hooks will also trash your worms faster, but if you need to use it, wet it prior to insertion. 1 Quote

Super User Spankey Posted September 26, 2018 Super User Posted September 26, 2018 This one shop near me looks to be pushing those Berkley Fusion hooks. He had a pretty good selection but they are not what I feel I need at this time. Have that heavy flipping/punching thing going on. Great hook I'm sure but that type of fishing I'm not there yet. For quite a few weeks now I've been dealing with a dink and runt lollapoliza. Feel the need to step up that senko size and see if I can draw bigger hits. Quote
Topwaterdude Posted September 26, 2018 Author Posted September 26, 2018 I really like the size of the 5/0 seems I don't miss as many Quote

I also have the Owner Wide Gap Plus coming in 4/0 & 5/0 also. Will have them before Sunday. At BPS today there is 10% off if you spend over $50.00 and 2 day shipping. Been wanting that 100 MPH jacket liner for some time. Seemed like the price was right and the deal was real. Thanks again. My winter project will be to set myself with a heavier punching/flipping/slop set up for this heavy vegetation I encounter. I have to go with the lighter wt. hooks right now. I know I'm taking myself out of the game by not fishing the heavy stuff properly. Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted September 27, 2018 Super User Posted September 27, 2018 Let me backup a second and explain why I like an offset EWG hook as opposed to a regular offset worm hook. When Senko fishing the bite is usually an all or nothing strike as opposed to tail biting. It is my opinion that the EWG hook protruding farther out from the bait does 2 things, 1. Allows you to detect bites faster since it will make contact with the fish sooner and 2. minimizes the number of fish gut hooked since the EWG will lodge quicker than a straight shank. I see no increase of bites or fish from straight shanks which would be my main reason for switching. Quote

We all have our own ideas about hook styles. I am not a fan of EWG hooks for worms and would use a spring lock design like Owners Twistlock Light hook or down size the Gamakatsu Super line spring lock hook. My reasoning is EWG hooks gap is too wide and oversize loop can cam over flat inside the basses mouth when the bass crunches down during the strike. All a worm hook gap needs for a is to be 2X the worm diameter. Tom Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 27, 2018 Super User Posted September 27, 2018 Everyone has their own personal repertoire confusion when it comes to fishing. EWG, Offset, & Straight shank hooks all work, one could argue slight advantages for each. Quote
GReb Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 I prefer straight shank in heavy grass. EWG in most every other application. 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG is the most versitile IMO Quote
Topwaterdude Posted September 27, 2018 Author Posted September 27, 2018 I was using a 3/0 ewg but I was missing fish so I tried a 5/0 ewg made huge difference in hook up percentage for me I was just wondering if bigger hook on speed worm was taking some of the action away. Quote
