I just bought a brand new Sedona 3000 spinning reel and it’s fully functional and fine, it just seems when the spool is spinning and going up and down it makes more noise than I’d like it to.

This is the second one I’ve checked out that sounded like this. Is this just the way they are, or is there some sort of oilling I can do to help it run smoother?

Thanks a ton, and have a great one all!

Just wondering if anyone has had any problems like this before?

Perhaps not enough grease on the gear assembly inside behind the handle.  I don't have a Sedona, I do have a Sahara and every year I pull the handle side cover, clean and regrease the gears.  It really is quite easy to do.  At the same time I clean the drag stack under the spool and the handle bearing.  Just a thought.  Now, I do have a Daiwa 2500, which does have a faint "clicking" sound upon retrieve and always has even though I clean and regrease the gears each year.

Thankyou OnthePotomac ?, I will go ahead and check that out.

I've had Shimano spinners in the past that would make a scuffing sound that coincided with the spool oscillation. I never was smart enough to figure if something was rubbing or was related to the oscillating gears and slider. I have Stradics now with worm gear oscillation.  No problems now.

The Bassman, that’s exactly how I’d describe it. It’s a “scuffing” sound. I tried 4 different Sedona Fi’s at Bass Pro today again. And all of them make that sound. I guess it’s just the way they are made.

As much as I like Shimano that's been one gripe I've had with them.  I had a Symetre (which was a nice reel) that I took back because of it. Take it back. Daiwa has a new line of spinners in that price range and they're great.

I have a symmetre and we all know how old they are and I’ve not experienced this scuffing sound. I’ve tried the lesser models including the Sedona and I have never heard that sound either.  If I did and I didn’t like it, I’d return. I need to be happy with these types of purchases.

I've noticed this noise too on many Shimano and Pflueger spinning reels that I have when they were new. I pulled the spool and put a drop of oil on the spool shaft and the noise disappeared.

I've had this issue before on some older Saharas, cleaning and re-lubing seems to fix it. I wonder if it's just the way materials within the internals interact each other and too little oil causes it? Anyways, I do NOT get that on my Sustains, so something about either the internals or the spool material seems to be the culprit, or maybe they just grease them a bit more.

Aside from that, it never impeded my fishing, they work fine if you don't mind the slight noise. I found myself tuning it out.
