GeekOutdoors Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Hi guys, I've decided I should use my CB more and the reason I'm not using them is that my gear is almost all fast action or beyond except for trout rods. I was pretty much set on the Fenwick Lunker Stik in 7'3" lenght. I was wondering which power should I buy ? There is a Medium and a Medium Heavy. I have lots of thinfin size 6 and a few others. Also Rapala Lipless Rattlin Rap size 7 and 8. I could probably use the spinning med/mod. fast Elite Tech bass for the TF but I figure I would need something else for the lipless and larger cranks ? Super User Raul Posted September 22, 2018 Super User Posted September 22, 2018 For smallish baits like my absolute favorite, Rapala Shad Rap n'such, a medium power is best imo, but for beefier baits like Traps, DTs n'such a MH is best. Quote
Vincent_Diesel Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 In your case it sounds like adding a medium power to your arsenal would be ideal. Nevertheless, you want medium for cranks anyways to maximize hook set. For larger cranks possibly consider a medium heavy action but keeping a moderate tip. Quote
ohboyitsrobby Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 A medium rod is gonna be more versatile. Especially one with a moderate action. Gonna cover most of your cranking needs except 4.0 and bigger squarebills and big deep diving cranks. I throw a spoon and topwater on a medium moderate also. Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 22, 2018 Super User Posted September 22, 2018 Hope you are using a spinning outfit trying to cast a Thin Fin 06, it weighs 1/5 oz with aerodynamics of a patato chip! Tom 1 1 5 Quote
jbrew73 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 “Aerodynamics of a potato chip”. That has to be the quote of the month winner! ? 4 Quote

Super User Angry John Posted September 23, 2018 Super User Posted September 23, 2018 If you find a 7' medium mf action it will work well for cranks spinner baits and lipless. 2 Quote

The reel size/weight effects the balance of the combo rod and reel. The Spinning reel size also has an affect on the line you use. Diving lures with bills put tension on the line and don't allow the line to untwist as you retreive, so the line ends up twisting using a spinning reel. I would be looking at rods with moderate action, not fast, in the 3 or medium power. Tom 1 Quote

As for line I honestly dont know, maybe Light fluorocarbon since it sinks ? Quote
GeekOutdoors Posted September 24, 2018 Author Posted September 24, 2018 I also saw the HMG 7'2 medium/MF casting that might fit the bill? Quote
kenmitch Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Good luck on your quest for the perfect rod for you. I've been debating back and forth for weeks looking for a new casting rod to pair up with my Revo MGX. I wound up going with the St. Croix Mojo Glass 6' 10" Medium/Moderate from BPS. I went with the shorter rod as I kayak fish and I prefer the slightly shorter handle. I like to take advantage of their stretch your payment options and it was the last day. Seemed like a good option too me as I really love throwing those lipless crankbaits around. Those dang dinks sometimes pull the hook on my current rod that is Medium/Fast. 1 Quote

Matt_3479 Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 I was using an abu veritas spinning rod for 2 years and this season after not overly enjoying crankbait fishing due to lower success rates I purchased a 7’ g.loomis imx pro 845c cbr and I love it! I have been throwing it every chance I get and have caught more fish, more big bass then almost any other bait I’ve thrown. Quickly becoming one of my favorite Rods and style of fishing! (Careful though, that’s what confirmed my addiction to loomis rods, getting another loomis tomorrow) Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 28, 2018 Super User Posted September 28, 2018 Never handled a Lunker Stik. I do have a few HMGs and like them a lot. Another rod you might be able to find in your budget range is the BuCoo SR. Falcon makes some nice sticks. The Lightning Shock is obviously another contender. 1 Quote

The Lightning rods left in B&M stores are 2 pieces. I dont know about Falcon I will take a look at them when I get home I'm still lost with line choice though... Quote
HazeRVA Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 I recently got the Falcon BuCoo SR "Trapcaster". It's 7' MH/Mod. Great little rod. Using it for lipless cranks/squarebills/topwater treble hook lures. Fishes a little lighter than a true MH. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 29, 2018 Super User Posted September 29, 2018 Fluorobon doesn't sink fast enough to help getting diving crankbaits any deeper then mono line. I use Big Game 10 and 12 on mono for several reasons when cranking diving lures. The most important is it's easy to cast, good knot strength and inexpensive to replace worn line. Medium divers you don't need low gear ratio reels, deep divers they help. Tom 1 Quote
