Fish MD Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Just bought a new Nissan Titan and hopefully soon will be towing my boat. How many use 4 wheel drive on the ramp and is it needed on a small light boat and what feels like such a big engine? Also, side note, but has anyone had any experience installing Nerf Bars or round step bars on a truck? Thanks Quote
_tyler_wright_ Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 as for the Nissan you should have no problem bein as it has a pretty hefty v8. And nerf bars yes i have expierence with them. PM me for any questions. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 I have had to use 4x4 a time or two on ramps that were slick. It never hurts to put the truck in 4x4 every once in a while. Just remember to take it out before you head down the road. Quote

ba7ss3in Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I have used mine but this lake didn't have a ramp, other than that, no. Quote
Hot Rod Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I've have not had to use 4wd to get up a ramp, even a very steep one that I often use that was built to accomidate sailboats and their extra deep drafts/keels. I guess all the extra tongue weight keeps the rear tires from spinning. Though I have had the same experience with a light aluminum boat and a much heaver glass rig. Its nice to know the 4wd is there if you need it though. Quote
tntitans21399 Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 I haven't ever had trouble with my 2wd Dodge Dakota with a V6 or my dad's 2wd GMC 2500 pulling his cuddy cabin. Quote
HPBB Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 I have been towing boat since 1990, boats fron 12 footers to 32 foot poontoons. I got my first 4x4 in 2005, always had 2wd, and never really had any problems. I mean if the ramp looked bad I didn't launch. I got stuck once, but I would have even with a 4x4. the trailer fell off the end of the ramp and the frame stuck on the cement. since I got my 4x4 (Chevy Tahoe) I have never needed the 4x4. I used it in 4x4 once on a muddy ramp, but I think I could have pulled it in 2wd, but put in 4wd just incase. just ease on the gas. I see to many guys that put down to much power and that is why they get stuck. also if you are spinning on a ramp. I don't know if a Nissan will do it, but GM truck will start in 2cd gear when put in 2cd gear. this will make it harder to spinn tires, yes you will need it give it more gas, but it helps. that is a trick I always used with my 2wd's Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted March 8, 2008 Super User Posted March 8, 2008 I always put my truck in 4wd low range when pulling the boat out. It is a lot easier on your trucks transmission, you don't jerk the boat or the trailer, and your tires will wear much less. And believe me, you will not forget that it's in 4 low when you pull out. ;D Quote
NAILER Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 . Depends on ramp if steep, slick, or maybe just a dirt ramp. I've used all these and have needed it at times. Quote
