Rolltidehack Posted September 17, 2018 Posted September 17, 2018 For some reason my solix shuts off and restarts randomly when I go to crank my motor. I replaced the crank battery with a new one and still having the issues. Sometimes it will crank and not turn off but its hit or miss, it doenst make any sense. Also I have a helix 12 at the bow and it doesn't do that ever. Here is what I have if it helps 4 batteries 3 for Ulterra 36v 1 for motor, helix 12, solix 15 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted September 17, 2018 Super User Posted September 17, 2018 What size batteries? What manufacturer? MCA? Reserve Capacity? What size and make of outboard do you have? Is your finder wired direct to battery? Quote
Rolltidehack Posted September 17, 2018 Author Posted September 17, 2018 3 are Marine Master dc27 (Trolling) CCA 575 / MCA 705 / 23 AMP 1 is Bass Pro xps24m (Crank) CCA 800 / MCA 1000 / RC 130 07 Merc DFI 200hp I believe its directly wired. I had a local marina install all of it while I was deployed. Another odd thing. If I leave the master switch on and even the nav lights it usually wont shut off. Again even that's hit or miss. Something is mucked up, I have a few buddies running duals at console and even duals in front. Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted September 17, 2018 Super User Posted September 17, 2018 Obviously when you crank the motor a voltage glitch is causing a glitch in your Solix which is causing it to reboot.. It's not loosing power completely. If it were you would have to power it on again to restart it. Check the voltage displayed on your Solix and see if you can see a pattern between the voltage displayed before you crank and when the problem occurs. The voltage should be the highest when the cranking battery is fully charged and everything but the Solix is turned off. If it only happens when the voltage is below a certain value then I would look at your the wiring. If it happens regardless of the displayed voltage then it's going to be more diffcult. Quote
Rolltidehack Posted September 17, 2018 Author Posted September 17, 2018 I'll give that a go. I'm leaning towards something is fouled up with the wiring they did. Quote
Way north bass guy Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 I had a bow unit ( Helix 9), that did this exact thing. Needed larger gauge wiring. I went with 10g straight to the cranking battery, and it’s never done it again. Quote
BassThumb Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 Same story. Rewired with solid 10-gauge wire and it never happened again. Using solid wire makes rewiring a boat much easier because it's nearly as stiff as a coat hanger. You can just aim it and start pushing. It'll get there. Use heavy-duty inline fuses, of course. Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted September 18, 2018 Super User Posted September 18, 2018 Also check and clean your battery connections. Even if they look good. Quote
Rolltidehack Posted September 19, 2018 Author Posted September 19, 2018 Haven't had a chance to get in there yet but I got to thinking (uh oh), doesn't the solix come with the power/ground wired that is correct for the unit? If not, cant have nuffin Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 19, 2018 Super User Posted September 19, 2018 Do you have a separate charger for your starting/fish finder battery?l If not, you could be simply discharging it yielding low voltage which usually is the cause for anomalies that you describe. If you do a lot of time on the trolling motor, with the big engine not on, but the electronics on, then you are using a lot of amperage without much recharging time. Happened to me because I thought the charger purchased with the boat charged all batteries. It didn't. If not using one of your fish finders, put in on standby. It will not use nearly as much amperage, and will come back instantly when you hit the power button again. I am surprised that bigger wires are fixing problems like this. The amperage is significant, but not so high that wire size should be an issue. About 6 amps for a modern fish finder. Quote
Rolltidehack Posted September 19, 2018 Author Posted September 19, 2018 I have the minn kota precision 4 bank so it should be charging all the batteries. Again it's odd that it doesn't do it everytime but enough to frustrate me and as mentioned before my front 12 never shuts off. Quote
gnappi Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 +1 OFC 10 gauge is your best friend to solve voltage glitches. Quote
Texas Cajun Posted June 27, 2021 Posted June 27, 2021 Was happening to me. I fixed mine by dimming the display until it stopped restarting. Quote
