Weighted hooks effective?

Are weighted hooks in your tackle box? Are these used much? I see two possible benefits:

 

1) Cleaner presentation perhaps, minimize weight slipping along your line.

2) Change the distribution of weight so lures nose-dive less, keeping the hook barb upward.

I think most refer to these as keel weighted EWG hooks. I do have these and use them with plastic swimbaits, such as the Keitech Fat Swing Impacts. The weights keeps the lure from rolling over so that the tail gives off the proper presentation. It also serves to get the lure down to the depth needed during retrieve. Probably useful for other types of lures, such as craws with long appendages that you want to swim back along the ground, but I've never done that.

Exactly. I'd just add that fluke type baits use keel weighted hooks as well to get them down quicker and keep them down instead of rising quickly when you jerk them.

By far, my most used hook/presentation.   If you get them like that (without a keeper), do yourself a favor and get some hitchhikers or Owner CPS's.

BTW, you may read about some of us using baits 'rage-rigged' - that is the kind of hook most of us are referring to

I prefer them with the screw lock keepers.  if you try to Texas rig any plastic with those keel weighted hooks, you are going to tear the bait up horribly.  You can insert the head from the line tie end of the hook though but that is still a larger hole than I want to put in the bait.

They work great with high action baits, like Ragetail.  So much, many call it "Rage-Rigging"

Been watching a lot of videos lately including re-runs of Bassmaster and didn't notice this presentation being used much if not at all. I had ordered a 5 pack and based on some of the suggestions I will give it a shot.

I use them all the time, but with the screw lock.  
I use them with paddletails and Ragetails.  Love it.

I use the Owner ones all the time and have recently bought a mold to start pouring them.

I have a mold to pour this type weighted hook and buy the centering pin type screwlocks in bulk. It offers a unique fall that really drives them crazy at times. The horizontal bait really seems deadly with craw baits.

You should try new VMC hooks for this mold.

Where do you get just the EWG hooks that work with the screw locks?  I bought 5 of the owner pro packs when Amazon had a pricing mistake and they don't really work with conventional EWG offset hooks.

as been mentioned in other threads, I use worm hooks and if it isn't a good day for throwing it or the worm is too light, I'll crimp a lead split shot on the curve of the hook after I put the worm on. Helps it run with the point up also.

 

Lot cheaper too!

Seems to work best for me late fall to early spring. Crawfish them self slow down in cold water so it’s sensable

As mentioned above, I use these in many different applications. I like them especially when I want to bait to get down quicker and stay down longer.

I like that EWG style better than the screw in type because the bait will stay on it after catches. But I'll poke the hole thru the nose of the plastic with the point then feed the eye backwards thru the hole. I don't try to run that hook and weight thru the plastic.

Thanks for the offer, but I already have more of the weighted hooks (Gamakatsu Superlines) than I need.
