Trox Posted September 14, 2018 Posted September 14, 2018 For me, It's NRX and Aldebaran. Like fishing with a feather and crazy sensitive... Another good reel for that rod is like everyone is saying, da STEEZ! NRX+Ald=$920 , NRX+Steez=2 pennys off a grand (both before taxes, better buy from TW!) Quote

The TWS does make the newer Daiwa reels goofy shaped compared to the pre TWS reels. The Steez is supposed to be the one they got right and a turning point in TWS reel design but I'm waiting until they are $300 reels used in mint condition before going after one. It's really just the bump that kills for me. The reel with a RCS 1012 SV spool in it casts amazingly smoothly, just effortless distance and control, but that bump is just the worst. Also, while I don't hate the TW, it is very easy to see how much more trim and streamlined the Steez SV TW could have been without it and I don't think the TW system brings enough to the table to be worth the design restraints it seems to cause. In any case, the Steez is on the FMJ, spooled with 16lb tatsu. I am going to hit the lake tomorrow afternoon with a 1/2oz jig tied on and see what kinda trouble I can get in to. Quote
detroit1 Posted September 15, 2018 Posted September 15, 2018 I sure would like to fish with a high-end outfit for a day. I guess one of you guys are just gonna have to take me fishing someday.... Quote
bunz559 Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 For texas rigged baits on the lighter range I'd go with a Dobyns 743 HP paired with a 8:1 Shimano Metanium. For heavier texas rigged baits I'd go with a Dobyns 745 HP paired with a 8:1 Metanium as well. That should set you at about a grand after taxes and shipping. Maybe a little less so you can also throw in some Power Pro 30lb braid and some SF Sniper 14lb line. Quote

That reel seat might nestle your fingers into a position that will not allow the ring finger to find the bump. That reel seat does have problems with reels with larger gearboxes but that shouldn't be a problem for the Steez. I am one of the weirdos who likes the ACS seat, but I don’t have one in my collection anymore. I fished the Steeze SV TW on the FMJ for a solid 7hours the other day. It was super comfortable and while a jig bite never happened, I got a few on a Cover Craw pitched around some pads. The combo feels super light in hand and the rod has far more power then it initaly feels like. 1 Quote

They may not last long but they can tempt picky fish that have seen a lot of other baits I have the Cover Craws and some Fat Ikas in a 3500 box and switch between them when the current one gets destroyed. They seem to work about the same. Quote

DaveT63 Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 I would buy a couple combos, used, for that money. If you are patient, you can find a like-new St Croix Legend Elite, an NRX, a Steez, and an SV 103, all for under $1000. I think I spent about $925 total on the ones I have. Quote
DanTheFireman Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 After reading thru, I've really got to try an NRX. The He3 LMH is one of my favorite rods so far and have three M Exprides and one ML which IMO are great, the NRX must be something special. Also, the Metanium HG came up several times, I switched two to the brass gears and Carbontex drag and left one stock, an easy swap and it really does make the reel even better. Quote
