Topwaterdude Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 If you had a $1,000 to spend on rod and reel for Texas rigged baits what would you get? Quote
kenmitch Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 If it was me I'd spend less on a combo and hire some hot looking hoty to go fishing with me a couple times. 1 4 Quote
Topwaterdude Posted September 9, 2018 Author Posted September 9, 2018 I'm new to the forum and been reading alot of post about $100 range rods and reels I was curious what the $500 rods and reels people like. Personally I have a 3-daiwa tatula 3 CT ,3-Lew's,speed spools, 1-pfleuger president,1-Kast king speed demon with Dobyns fury rods. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 9, 2018 Super User Posted September 9, 2018 Are we talking MSRP or what we paid. Huge difference 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 9, 2018 Super User Posted September 9, 2018 My jig rod is a st croix legend 70mhf with a steez 100. If you pay retail that's a grand. If I wanted a different rod I would get one. Works wonderful 1 Quote
Basseditor Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 Steez and Kistler Zbone rod. I have several set ups now, 7’ and 7’3” and 3 of the 7’6” Rods and all have Steez reels. $5,000 plus retail. Luckily, I didn’t pay that much, but almost. 1 Quote

Kistler's Zbone is a good rod but not in the class of an NRX, Conquest, or K2 in my opinion. I own all and sold my Zbones. I would likely get an NRX and Metanium DC or Steez, whichever you prefer. Scrapiron Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 Megabass Destroyer FMJ or Javelin (could use either depending on lure weight, cover, etc.) with a Steez SV TW. Actually, a Steez A TWS balances a little better on the Javelin. Under a grand! So, I'd add a ZPI PG spool to the SV, maybe a Steez SV 1016 spool to the A. 1 Quote

CrankFate Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 I have $1,000.00 to spend every time I buy a rod and reel. The combo is usually $600.00 or less. I never felt any benefit to a very expensive rod and because of that, a very expensive rod does not make me feel better about fishing the same way an overpriced reel does. I’ll feel better keeping the other $400.00. Quote

The performance difference from a rod around $200-$300 such as an Expride or Dobyns Champion to a Conquest, NRX, GLX, Destroyer, K2 is significant. I always recommend spending more on the rods. There are a lot of great reels that are phenomenal in the $179.99-$299.99 range that provide great value whereas I can't say the same about rods but there are a few. Quote

I have tried a few spools and I think the ZPI PG is next on the list. 2 Quote

I like the 105 spool requires no backing and holds just the right amount of 12 lb flourocarbon 8 hours ago, Topwaterdude said: New and what we would pay. Got a nib steez for 350 which really reduced the cost of my setup. TW is my primary store but when I do I buy big during the sales. LABOR DAY was 15% off. Quote

Not knocking anyone. But when I go through the store and bounce every rod in the store around, I never find myself leaning towards the more expensive ones. In most cases, I find rods under $200 better than those over $200. I don’t like needle thin rods that feel like a 7 foot long hollow pencil. I’m happier with a 7’ BPS Crankin Stick than a super thin, super light and stiff expensive rod with tiny guides. Quote
Stingray23 Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 I went with the MB Destroyer FMJ and Daiwa Steez A. 1 Quote
Hillbilly Bennett Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 I tend to spend more on my rods than reels but man can I tell a difference when I throw some of the higher dollar stuff. I am a G-Loomis guy and I’ve had and loved IMX and GLX spinning and baitcasting Rods. My most expensive reels are Shimano Curados and Quantum Vapor PTs. ($150-$175 range) Quote

Gold color parts on the Steez to match the gold trim on the FMJ. I have a Steez tw sv and I’m going to give this combo a try this weekend. The sv103 gives the rod a slight butt-heavy feel, which I like, but the Steez makes it super light in hand. Quote

Eh, it is a good reel but I would not pay anywhere close to MSRP for a second one. Not that it's bad, but it's not $200 better then an sv103. Right now it is rodless as it was uncomfortable to me on the rod I bought it for, an MBR 783 GLX. It feels comfortable on the FMJ casting around the yard, so I have some hopes that it will work out. The Steez TW SV has a bump-out on the rear-bottom on the handle side that my ring finger rubs on a few rods I have tried. The Alphas series has been comfortable on every rod I have put one on. I bought it looking for a middle ground between the Alphas and sv103, but if I could go back in time I would have spent the money on an TD-Z Ito and a ZPI spool. It's a bummer but I don't think there is a single current production Dawia reel that I am really interested in. Quote
