Definitely great info in this thread, lots of good stuff.

This might put your mind completely at ease though OP, in regards to this particular rod. I purchased a 6'10" MH/F Bass Mojo from BPS on June 3rd. Two days later it snapped on it's very first cast. I took it back to BPS and just took the $130 refund. Didn't want to get it replaced because I did a bit of research and right there on BPS' own website in the Reviews was all I needed to know that I wasn't the only one it happened to, and neither are you.

Click over to the "Reviews" tab and take solace that this exact problem has happened to lots of folks with this particular rod. You state that BPS gave you a new one, you can decide for yourself after reading those reviews whether you feel comfortable keeping the replacement or not.

What did you end up getting?

I've been there and broke two St. Croix spinning rods over the years. Avid and a Premier. Most likely my fault and the high sticking once.  St. Croix will take care of you. The other time it was plain stupidity and not thinking about what I was doing by choking up on the rod while quickly horsing a fish over the side of the boat. They will take care of you. They put out a good product. I have my share of St. Croix rods. Can't go wrong.

Sucks but luckily you had one of the best in the industry in St. Croix IMO. They take care of their customers, that's a fact.

I have that exact same rod. Caught a 5lb and 7 lber on it last fall. Never had a problem.

Nothing that day. I've purchased a couple rods since then (an abu, an okuma) for specific presentations, but mostly because I hunted down sales (no loyalty to a specific brand, just our pocketbook and quality products).

I understand St Croix is a terrific brand and the issue with that particular rod is not a reflection of their quality. I've only been at the fishing thing with a level of seriousness for a couple years (so take this with a grain of salt) but I have two of the BPS pro qualifier 2 rods (one spinning, one casting) that I got on sale and I don't have a single bad thing to say about either of them. Lots of good memories so far with both.

I could be wrong, but I think the faster the action, the easier it is to high stick a rod.  It's about geometry of our handling the rod and possibly the construction of the rods in which the taper between the very stiff butt section and the much lighter power tip is so short.

And as has been mentioned many times before , the new hi mod graphites won't take what we got used to with the old glass rods.  And in fact, the more you pay for a rod to get max sensitivity, the more fragile it is likely to be.

Regarding the video, I don't agree that high sticking does any damage to the blank until it actually breaks.  These blanks are very brittle.  They have absolutely no plastic deformation.  They are either in one piece or broken.

BUT, with respect to the damaging of a rod without breaking it through its colliding with another rod or the lure nicking the rod, I believe that is absolutely true.  That will damage a rod such that the rod will break later.

Of course the bottom line is to avoid banging them around or hitting them with a lure, etc, and don't high stick, and the rod can last forever.

My first rod is a medium 6.6 ugly stick. You can tie that thing in a knot. I needed a rod for more power from the bank to get me out of the vegatation snags and continuous line breaks from heavy lures. So I ended up with a 7.1 MHF rod to help me power through that. I still like it I possibly need to adjust my fishing. I’m pretty new at it and those fish in my pics were fighters and strong. Should I switch it for a medium powered? Would it take more vend? I was using 40lb braid and a curado dc. Just nervous using this new one now.

I would recommend the American made Avid series..

It's more money but it is superior in everyway.

I had originally planned for that one, but a high stick is a high stick no?

Yep. Except Avids take it better. Heck I've high stuck my Rage flippin stick a bunch and it's survived.. another thing, I do not use braid. I use Yo or Pline.

Then again, perhaps I'm just lucky.

Does braid affect rod breakage?

If you tested rod breakage in a lab with mono, flourish, and braid I think the results would show braid would break the rod soonest due to not having any stretch or forgiveness. But in a real world application I don’t know if the variance is enough to make any real difference.
