Fished with a friend for the first time on a Thursday nighter here  as my other partner is in the moving process out of state.  Was a bit breezy around five but just before dark it layed down.  Fishing has been very tough but he said I'll be there.  I warned him about the mosquito's coming out if the breeze died...he said...Oh...they don't bother me!!  Long story short....I almost learned some new words!!!  And I did learn to wait and put it on just before dark as you sweat so much during the day I think it just rinses it off.

Anyway....lessons learned by all.

Late summer early fall is the worst for bugs!

I know this for sure. Going through it right now. I'm on a 6 day steroid regiment and some topical cream to get rid of my recent bites. I just don't know what it was that was biting me. Meds now just starting to kick in. Monday morning on the lake I was getting bit by those grey flies that you come across down at the beach. But I didn't think I was getting bit that bad by them. Maybe was just obvlibious to what was going on. d**n itch will drive ya crazy.

  • Two places that I put my kayak in to fish are so bad that the spray is right next to me in the truck and I spray down immediately after I step out of my truck to keep from being eaten alive in the ten minutes it takes me to get on the water.

The amount of bites I've had at dusk the last 2 weeks has been insane.  Every cast results in multiple bites....but it has been a struggle to connect.  Tried sweeping, gentle lifting, and crossing their eyes...just not sticking many.  Spent more time after what was biting me then worrying about what was biting the end of my line Tuesday night.

On a side note,  I thought it was a good idea to pull my socks up high to cover more leg area.  Didn't apply any spray to that area.  The majority of the itchy bites are all where my socks covered.  Guess I wasn't feeling the bite through them.

Waiting for the ramp to clear and get the boat loaded was an all out assault.  The lights were basically a big neon sign that said bite me.

I was up in northern Wisconsin for a week in July.  At night they got me through a fairly thick hoodie.  My back was chewed up something fierce!

Those "no-see-um's" can drive you batty, too.

You guys have not seen true “bug time” unless you've been in the bush in northern Ontario about the first half of May. When the blackflies are at their thickest, it can be hard to even breathe!

Skeeters are lightweights compared to black flies, glad we don't have them here.

The mosquitoes down by the Kansas River are terrible. I swear they'll just lick bug spray off you like a lime chaser for a tequila shot. I think it's all the pollution in the river transforming them into super bugs or something. I used to sleep all the way inside my sleeping bag when I'd catfish all night, no matter how hot it was, better than getting eaten alive by those things.

I have a bite on the back of my heel right now that itches like crazy and I can't get it scratched good enough through my work boots, it's killing me!

A couple years ago a pharmacist turned me on to a "pen"  It's called "After Bite".  You rub it on right after you get those dang bites.  Worked so well for us that I now carry one in my golf bag, boat, and truck.....wife carry's one too.  Amazing stuff.  But....needs to be applied within the hour for best results.

Good luck
