New crankbait combo

Hello everyone,

 

I am looking to get a crankbait rod and reel. So far I’m leaning towards the St Croix Premier cranking rod (7ft, moderate action, medium power), and then for my reel, I’m looking at the Lews Tournament MB , Lews BB1, or the Abu Garcia Revo SX. I am torn on the reels also trying to keep the reel and rod under $180. Any suggestions?

I have a bb1 and 2 mb. I prefer the mb. Nothing wrong with the bb1 but it is FAR more finicky than the mb. If your super confident in your baitcasting abilities (I'm no pro, but definitely not a novice) and want the larger spool capacity you might like the bb1 more, but If I could do it all over I would pass on the bb1 for a 3rd mb.

 

 

You can get the mb for $109 or less on eBay, not sure about the bb1 but they are usually about $20 more than a mb.

I agree, go with the MB. I have the TS1SMB model which features a high capacity spool. I can't say enough good things about this reel, it is a rock solid performer.

I also have a BB1 and two MB reels I personally like the the BB1 better but they are both okay. I don't care anything about the magnetic brakes on the MB. I don't use them and leave them turned off. You need to decide if you like magnetic brakes or not. The BB1 also has a deeper spool to hold more line. Lead Head is right about the BB1 being about $20 more.

I have a couple different Lew’s Reels and I purchased the MB for cranking, it was the first reel I’ve had with the internal centrifugal brakes and I’m not a huge fan of them. But I really like the reel. I use 12lb Seaguar InvizX and I can cast with it almost as well as my Tournament Pro G. I also occasionally use it pitching Texas rigs and smaller jigs and even with the fluoro I typically have no issues. I have the cranking model as well with a lower gear, a longer 95mm handle, and a larger Spool capacity. I replaced the stock grips with Winn Grip paddles and am pleased with how well they work. Ended up putting the round Winn grips on my other reels as well. 

 

Check out the Lew’s Custom Speed Stick Series rods too, I went with their Squarebill Crankbait rod (6’9’’, medium heavy, moderate fast) and I absolutely love it. It’s super light, comfortable, and extremely sensitiveWorks well with squarebills, 5-10ft crankbaits, Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits!

I like my St. Croix Mojo Bass Glass rod, it’s Med/Mod. It’s differe than using a graphite rod, that’s for sure.
