LuffDaddy Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Hey guys! I have a quick question. I'm relatively new to bass fishing as I just started in June but I've already acquired quite a bit of gear. I put together a frog pole but I'm not having luck and I just want to l make sure it's not from my line. I'm using 50 lb power pro braid in the high vis yellow. Is that making them line shy? Can a black sharpie on the first couple feet make a difference or am I just over thinking? Thanks in advance! Quote
Finnz922 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 No, I doubt it's your line. #1 question I have for you is what is your exact problem? For example: are you not hooking up? Are they coming unbuttoned? Are they burying you in the weeds and then coming off? Quote

I use bright pink braid on my frog rig. No issues. Keep at it, you'll get bit. Late summer and fall are prime time for frogs. 1 Quote
Backroad Angler Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 You can use any color of line you want, that won't make a difference in your fishing. If anything, It's probably the time of day you're going, or how you're fishing the frog or the type of conditions, It can range. If I were you I would search up some videos and see what ya can learn from them, does'nt hurt! Best of luck Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted September 5, 2018 Super User Posted September 5, 2018 Try fishing a hollow belly frog around dawn, dusk, nighttime, low light conditions, etc. 1 Quote
LuffDaddy Posted September 5, 2018 Author Posted September 5, 2018 Thanks for the reply guys. You're all confirming what I initially thought. I read one comment in one article and it got me paranoid. I honestly think I just haven't been in the right spots at the right time. I literally haven't gotten a frog bite yet. And not to brag... But I having been picking up techniques FAST! I can walk it pretty d**n good... But not so much with the popping frog though. He seems to wanna bounce more than walk but every now and then I can get that one to walk instead of chug. I really appreciate the replies again guys, I think i just need to keep at it! Quote

I am also relatively new to frog fishing but have been working it super hard this season trying to learn and gain experience with the frog. From what I’ve read and tried this year colour of line hasn’t seem to effect the bite for me. Walking it is difficult at first, still struggle with it from time to time but does make a huge difference on the amount of blowups I get. The big problem I have is hook up ratio. I know it is lower with a frog but I seem to be ripping out of there mouth or pulling away to soon. I’ve slowed down a touch and been getting way more successful with hookup ratio Quote

Frogs, my favorite! A popping frog that walks well is the pad crasher Popping frog, just trim the skirt legs some. Also, consider trying a 5/16oz scum frog. It’s more of a finesse frog for me, it won’t cast as far as a bigger frog but it is less obtrusive, very weedless, compact, and soft, allowing better hookups. It’s great for skipping docks and overhangs. Like others mentioned, a Texas rigged buzz frog is great too, when the smash it but don’t commit, stop and let it sink. Often times they will hit on that fall. Like mentioned, keep at it! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 6, 2018 Global Moderator Posted September 6, 2018 I've fished them on bright green braid and had no problem catching fish. The places you're fishing a frog they're not going to be able to see the line anyways. Quote
LuffDaddy Posted September 7, 2018 Author Posted September 7, 2018 Well guys I kept at it and finally got one this morning! Had one that I didn't get a good hookset on then a few minutes later got another and drove both points in the roof of his mouth! That was so gratifying! He was 2.25 lbs, not too bad of a fish! Oh and btw.... I caught it on a $2 Ozark Trail frog from Walmart ???. 2 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 A lot to frog fishing is where you are throwing it. On the Potomac anyway it is up on the grass bed to off the edge a bit, then back up on to the grass bed. Quote
