I can't speak for everyone, but I've had to evacuate a handful of times in my life. The more I've had to evacuate the less I take. Theft is the last thing on my mind. With all of the idiots on the road I worry about getting out of town safe and I worry about whether or not I'll have a roof over my head when I get back.

 

The main things I have ready to go are clothes, charging cables, phone, tablet, and USB power supplies. Another important item for me is pulling the hard drives from my work stations (I HATE laptops). The hard drives include serial numbers, models numbers, and videos of any insurance reimbursable items (for stolen or damaged items). All of my photos are backed up on hard drives or in a cloud so I don't have to worry about those.

 

Any other valuables are put in a safe deposit box at the bank.

 

My son brings all of his baseball gear. His gear is expensive and although it can be replaced, it's all broken in and he has a comfort level with it. It also provides him comfort to be taking some of his stuff. If there's room (and there usually is) we bring our fishing gear. There's no telling how long we'll be out of town and it gives us something to do.

 

And of course, I bring my son and my dog. I tried to leave my now ex-wife behind once, but she caught on quick.

I was on the south end of Hilton Head when we evacuated for Hugo. As an Executive Committee member for the resort I was working for I had certain responsibilities in shutting down the hotel, so I was late getting off of the island.

 

Back then Hilton Head wasn't nearly as developed as it is now and we didn't have the easy access to I-95 or other points of egress that we have today. It took about 5 hours to get off the south end of the island and over the bridge to what is now a very populated Bluffton area. I remember seeing someone's Ferrari abandoned on the side of the road as we left the island. Good times.

 

Thankfully (for us and not for Charleston) the storm missed Hilton Head. It would have permanently split the island in two had it hit.

 

Fun fact: About 3 weeks before Hugo hit my girlfriend and I were taking a horse drawn carriage ride through Charleston and the driver was pointing out the hurricane proof construction on some older homes. He mentioned that historically Charleston gets hit by a major hurricane once every 100 years and they were about due.

What is not being discussed on TV and in the news abuot the hurricane is the situation with the wild animals.

 

Alligators, snakes, raccoons, squirrels, possums, deer, and other animals will seek high and dry ground, meaning they are coming into neighborhoods and into houses.

 

Even if your property escapes wind or water damage, you better be really careful when you return home and enter your house. And the wild animals will be hungry so watch your dogs and cats closely.

 

Be sure to post pics of your home and neighborhood when you return home.

Mother's family are Cajuns.

Virginia is a beautiful place to live I used to live in Fairfax VA I would love to go back again someday.

Fairfax is really built up with businesses and homes.

Maybe you can visit DC and Fairfax in the future.

I'm just north of the path of Florence when it comes by Columbia, SC. Not our first hurricane, but it might be the most rain I've ever seen in my nearly 50 years. And I'm really glad we recently got a new roof. The last one would not have withstood the sustained winds we're going to get.

We dodged a bullet here in Hampton Roads. Winds, sporadic rain from the 

bands but nothing torrential (yet - radar showing some coming). Got family

in SC that's in the swath.

Hopefully the storm will go further west before heading north and hit Tennessee in lieu of eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia.

 

Still a dangerous situation out there.

@N Florida Mike Burgaw had received 13 inches of rain. It appears points North of Wilmington got the brunt of the rain. The folks in Fayetteville are bracing for bad flooding. It's just beginning for points West. We are expecting at least five inches of rain here in the western part of the state. My family in Burgaw(20 minutes West of Wilmington) that stayed are sending reports they have no power and the flooding is going to worsen. Have you heard from you family?

image #1 shows actual Total rainfall past 72 hrs over eastern/central NC and it is well every bit as impressive and record smashing as the model data suggested it would be.

24 hr measurable rainfall total at my house is a little over 2”. i say measurable because much of it is “sideways”, or wind blown rain, that isn’t easily captured in my basic rain gauge. winds have been steady 20+ mph since Friday but the gusts have now increased to 35+ mph as we are now in the right front quadrant of the storm and the rainfall intensity is increasing. lucky to still have electricity at this point in time.

10 hours later, and it’s been raining here for 34 hours. the wind has finally settled down. folks down east are in dire straits. the flooding there is of biblical proportions.

I still havent heard from any of them. I called my cousin near wrightsville beach and the phone justs cuts off every time. Others live in wilmington, supply, Winnabow, Clarkton.No response from any of them. 

 

No response from them at Fayetteville/Hope mills either. 

They arent real close to the cape fear or lumber rivers though so I expect them to be o.k.

Mexico has been in "hurricane season" since May, for us fellas in the middle of the country that means it's going to rain almost daily until October, which is good because lakes fill up since agriculture doesn't need water for irrigation from them, bad because ..... it friggin rains, rains, rains, rains and ..... did I mention it rains ? and I can't go fishing because it rains or because rain leaves consequences, access to most lakes is through dirt roads which turn into mud roads, plus there are areas where landslides occur so you may not be able to get to to the lake.

The greater Richmond geographical area got hit today with tornados and heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Florence.

 

Had one tree bite the dust behind my house in the woods. No damages to any property.

 

Lots of roads closed by my house due to falling trees and power is out in the neighborhood.

 

Our sump pump was putting water out like crazy from under our house and the back yard is a water wonderland.

 

Our whole house generator saved us and we have had it running since 4 PM. Dominion Power says we should power back by 1 AM on Tuesday morning.

 

So far some major damage and one guy was killed when the tornado destroyed a warehouse.

 

Hope the storms go away, soon.

Raul, Buggs Island is off limits to water sports and fishing for the moment as the Corps of Engineers expects the lake to rise to 319, which is 19 feet higher than normal pool.

 

No use of campgrounds or boat ramps until further notice.

 

My bass club has a tournament this Sunday and hopefully the guys can fish it. I am going to the NASCAR race on Saturday and will miss the Sunday tournament since I will not get home until after midnight and would have to leave by 3 AM Sunday morning to make the blast off time.

 

So every now and then we get hit, too.

No power, flooding, and several trees down though none on the house, thankfully. My brother told me this afternoon that the north east cape fear is over its banks; the will have to release the levee upriver soon to help but that means more water to flood into Burgaw. It's a mess.

4:30 AM Tuesday September 18, 2018

36 customers are still without power in my neighborhood by Boshers Dam on the Historic James River.

 

A tornado went over our house and knocked down trees on Cherokee Road, one of the four ways in and out of our area.

 

We lost a tree in the woods behind our house.

 

Our generator has been on since 4 PM Monday afternoon.

 

Our son had a terribled time trying to get to our house to pick up his puppy with many streets closed by fallen trees and debris.

 

Buggs Island is closed to camping and fishing as it is expexcted to go to 19-feet above normal pool this week and our bass club has a tournament on Buggs this weekend.

 

Plus the NASCAR races on Friday and Saturday add to the confusion. We have to be ready to vector around any closed roads in or out of my neighborhood this morning.

 

And we thought we dodged a bullet when the remnants of Florence came around and clobbered us.
