River2Sea has a nice gimmick going.

With the Whopper Plopper. Offering a plethora of different colors/patterns, but outside of solid colors like Powder, Bone, and Loon, they're all clear and see through on the bottom. If the fish really pay that much attention, they'll get a good visual on what looks like a machine. Maybe they can identify various parts. I will never understand why some people stress over which color/pattern, or why there are articles on which colors for this and that. Looking at the bottom of a Bluegill pattern, I see a machine, not a Bluegill. Looking at the bottom of a Munky Butt pattern, I see a machine, not a Munky Butt. It's white, black, or literally anything because it doesn't matter. 

 

Thread inspired by a fishing buddy who called me from DSG earlier wanting to know what color to get, but he didn't want Bone or Loon. He wanted something "cool." Dude, pick a color that you would hang on the wall or literally close your eyes and pick blindly because it doesn't matter.

I felt the exact same way until this week. I started noticing that every plopper I own will turn on it's side a fair amount during a steady retrieve. This has to show a lot more of it's paint to the fish than if it were even keel. 

I plan on painting clear underside ploppers this winter when the water gets hard. 

River2Sea has hardly been a gimmick company, so I am not really sure what the hell they were doing with the ploppers. I was pretty put off by the clear belly's until I saw my loon and bone ploppers were always a 1/4 on their sides. Then I went and bought a few of the clear ones. 

I highly doubt the fish is getting such a good look at it that it see's the machine parts in the guts. If you're fishing a steady retrieve, I doubt they see much besides commotion. 

That being said. I am going to start buying the knock offs and seeing how those work. I only buy the real ploppers when they're on sale at Dicks from $16 to $10. I won't buy one full price because to me, they just aren't worth that.

Technically there are 2 types of Plopper “colors” They are clear and solid. The clear ones, like Bluegill and Monkey Butt, allow sunlight to penetrate the bait while solid colors, like Loon and Powder, do not. 

 

If you have a solid and a clear color you should be all set. The actual shades do help if you are fishing clear waters. I notice Bluegill works best for me in the clear river waters I fish. It produces more fish than any other color I own. Bone is a close second as fish seem to love that fish belly white color

I agree color doesn’t matter for Whopper Plopper and probably topwaters in general most of the time. 

 

When my friends and I fish Whopper Ploppers and Whopper Frogs we fish different colors and all catch fish. I always fish Monkey Butt and my friends usually fish Loon or Bone. 

 

 

Also, I can’t believe Berkeley didn’t name their new Whopper Plopper copycat the ‘Choppa’.

Wow. Exact same thing, cheaper, better color job. Whopper Plopper will live on name only. This isn't a Dinger vs Senko situation. Those baits move through the water column and have action to them on the way down and with twitches and jerks. Whopper Plopper is just a top water that needs to move water. Easy to replicate and replace.

Savage Gear has had their Smash Tail out for a little while now as well. I like the 100 size, it's been a good all around sized bait for me. They're a little thinner side to side but taller top to bottom than a plopper.

So ALL of the other companies use colors that fish can see except for River2Sea?  I'm not arguing your point at all about the uselessness of the vast majority of lure colors...but did someone at River2Sea steal your truck, wife, and life savings?

Paint jobs on fishing lures aren't meant to catch fish.  They are meant to catch the fishermen.

 

Some of my best lures have half the paint knocked off of them and look horrible to the human eye.  Fish don't seem to mind though.

If you can't understand that, aside from their solid colors, most of their WPs are completely clear on the bottom (i.e. the visible part to the fish), I can't help you out. The Berkley ones appear to all be a solid paint job.

Nearly exact copy cat of Whopper Plopper it seems.

 

It’s easier to copy a hardbait than a stickbait. 

 

Yamamoto makes his Senkos with just the right amount of salt for the perfect sinking presentation and no one has been able to copy that yet. 

 

Colors are made to catch fishedman, not fish. When we fish the Whopper Plopper or Whopper Frog and there is more than me we always fish different colors and all catch fish. If the fish are biting Whopper Ploppers or Whopper Frogs that day it seems color never matters. And that’s most likely because it is a topwater bait.

Whopper Plopper is one of my favorite lures. 

Like I said, I'm not arguing.  I buy lures because I think they look cool.  I don't have any idea what fish think is cool...or what my teenage son think's is cool for that matter.

I am really baffled by this post, and seems like someone is pro Berkley and wants to take a shot at River2Sea. 

 

Looking at TW to compare bottom colors (that sounds kind of strange lol)

 

Plopper 130/180

Silver = 4 White/Bone = 6 Copper = 2 Clear = 3 Red = 1 and Black = 2

 

Plopper Silent

Clear = 10 White/Bone = 5 Silver = 1 Black = 1 Chartreuse = 1 Copper = 1 Opaque White = 1 (T1000)

 

Choppo

Silver = 1 White = 5 Opaque White = 2 Green = 1 Black = 1

 

so looking at the colors River2Sea has a wider color selection with more clear options. That being said clear options may be better on a sunny day because they may reflect like more similar to a real baitfish on top. The only color R2Sea is missing in the smaller sizes is a green, I have what I believe is Bee Gee in the 190 size. 

 

I will admit that in the last couple of years Berkleys crankbait color options have kept me from purchasing and these haven’t changed my mind. My new topwaters for next year are a Savage zgear 100 size and a plopper 75.
