Owner Twistlock Flipping hook

I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, but I bought some of these hooks and for the life of me can't figure out how to rig these.  I usually texpose my plastics by skin hooking them.     It seems like angle of these hooks don't allow this to happen.   I have been doing this with others hooks for many years.   Tell me I am not nuts here.  Help a guy out.

You're not nuts, haha. Seems like owner does angle the tips like that. The beast hooks are the same way. I bend them down a bit with pliers.

I use owner jungle hooks for pitching/punching and am not able to texpose. So I leave hook buried in plastic but since I'm using a heavy rod with at least 50lb braid I can really whack them on the hook set to push the hook through the extra plastic.

Hey Fellas, thanks!!   I am glad to hear I'm not losing it (at least with this hook issue).   I was considering both solutions, but wanted to confirm I didn't get a bad batch or just miss something else.   Do you both still like the hooks?    I have always liked Owners quality and they seem to get plenty of love on the interweb.

Hey Croak, I also use a 7'6" heavy rod with these owner flippin hooks and have had great hook ups.  When burying the hook, does it still remain pretty weedless and does it tear up the plastic more or less than texposing it?

Hey DW, have you had any problems weakening the hooks when bending them in like that.  I have done it with a few hooks that I have opened a little getting them from a snag and haven't broken one, but they seem to open a lot easier afterwards.   Thanks

No sir not as of yet. They are pretty heavy gauge.  And I use braid too.

Thanks Catt!!   Do you know what the other is called?   Is there any advantage to using either.   Not sure why the flippin hook I have is shaped like that.  Anyone?

Thanks north!!   That looks more traditional in angle.  I would assume the flipping hook angled like that aids in hook ups?   I have hooked everything I set on so far, but couldn't get my bait weedless texposing.   I may try what Croak mentioned and may order some of the other ones and see what happens.  Thanks All!!

Same here. I love these hooks and with the setup I use, leaving the tip buried in the plastic has never presented a hookup issue.

When fishing heavy vegetation straight shank round bend hooks are most commonly used. Even when pegged heavy weights will push down on the hook exposing the hook point.

 

My personal choice ?

@Catt, what do you use to tie those on? It seems to me that the bait keeper is a little close to the eye for a uni or.... whatever that other knot is called. I can never remember.

 

Same with the vertical line ties on those owner flipping hooks... or has the era of the shank knots come and gone?

Palomar is the only knot I tie for monofilament, fluorocarbon, Copolymer, or braid.

Snell. Snell knot was the one I couldn't remember, but anyway....

 

Good to know. I literally bought a pack of the owner CPS flipping hooks last week and had been curious about that. The hooks themselves are built like brick you-know-what houses.

I used these for the first time this year and was also my first year punching. Caught plenty of fish (from dinks to 6 pounds) rigging the way others have said and just bury it in the plastic.

 

I've had no issues going through vegetation. I also only tie uni knots for everything and never have issues.

This is excellent, I was going to store these and move onto something else.  I am going to just bury the hookpoint in my plastics and give these another try.   I was get frustrated with point ripping the heck out of my plastics trying to texpose these.   ?

The whole idea of "texposing" your hook is you don't have to drive the hook point through the plastic.

 

My opinion is if ya can't drive a hook point through a piece of soft plastic ya need to reevaluate your rod selection or your hookset technique!

Thanks Catt!   When using these hooks with my flippin set up, they often come flying at me.   I am going to keep trying them and see if I like the screw lock and hook style.  I have some other flippin hooks I like also.

I have a couple of packs of the bottom ones here but I have just been trying to figure out what I would want to fish on them. I have the same model but in the light wire for senkos and if I wanted to do something more serious I would go with the Owner Jungle straight shank. Anyone have some suggestions for what I would want to use these with? Just seems like they would do a few things OK but that there are better choices for most specific baits.

Those hooks on the bottom will work well with pretty much any soft plastic. That said, in my experience they are pretty much the perfect hook for flukes and 3.8+ keitech fats, add a hook weight as needed
