Dobyns Sierra vs Shimano Curado ?

Curado rod that is. I haven’t seen much about it anywhere here and was hoping to see what y’all thought.

 

Many folks on here recommend Dobyns (especially with the warranty) but I’ve heard that you sacrifice a bit on sensitivity when compared against other rods in the price point.

 

For some backstory, I am looking for two casting rods: one that would be an all around MH rod, mostly for jigs and Texas rigs, and the second for top water/jerkbaits.

 

The Brands I’ve narrowed it down to are the Dobyns and Shimano....any thoughts or recommendations would be awesome...

I ordered a couple Sierras and returned them same day. The actions are way too soft for my liking. Their 734 was comparable to my MH/M crank rod and it's rated H/F. I haven't fished the Curado cuz I hate foregrips on my rods ?.

I have curado M/F 6'10 fish (1/4-1/2) with it only couple times. The foregrip is not that bad it is more like decoration than foregrip and act like lock nut same as my Ateos, but I don't like it either. The M/F is only a tad softer than my Daiwa MH/F (1/4-3/4). Another thing I don't like is reel seat design (not enough bank exposed) make my reel sit a little bit higher but I can feel vibration from the bite just fine. 

I use my Daiwa MH/F (got 3)for all around, Texas rig, Jig, top water, jerkbait, Senko, chatterbait you name it but mostly 3/8 or heavier.

The curado can cast Senko a mile and can cast down to Zoom weightless trick worm(plus 3/0 hook). The sensitivity is comparable to Daiwa or any rod in this price point.

My problem with this rod is, I wanna use it mainly for Fluke and Jerkbait, but the tip is not soft enough. It might be okay if use with big jerkbait like SP100 but anything smaller might have some hard time getting the right action. Too bad Shimano doesn't offer ML version of this rod.

The Sierra does have a softer tip but I knew that going in and I like my rods to have a little softer tip because I only use braid to a short leader. 

The Dobyns line is high quality and offers lots of options from the Fury, Sierra and Champion lines

I own a 703 spinning rod in the Sierra line and while I think its a good rod for its price point it is very tip heavy. I love the more moderate actions of the Sierra line, the guide train is very good for its price point, and the handle is comfortable.

 

I have my eye on that 7'5" heavy in the Curado line though!

Which fury and sierra models? I’ve been considering a fury for general worm and jig use and a Sierra for top water and jerkbaits , based on what I’ve read about their actions

Wouldn't you want to use the more sensitive higher end rod for contact baits? The Sierra 735 would be perfect for jig/worm for most people. I use a Fury 734 for topwater myself.

I have a Fury 734C, 704CB and a Sierra 734C and 735C

For topwater and jerk baits I use a shorter Abu Garcia rod with a moderate action specifically for those 2 applications

I have the 704C and found the tip to be what I'd call fast, certainly much faster than moderate and pretty stout tip on it overall, but it is more like a MH/F rod than a H/F for sure. Certainly wouldn't consider fishing a smaller crank on it...

 

I have no real experience with Shimano rods, but some of them do run significantly on the heavy side...

The 704 is different than the 734 I referred to. The shorter rod is stiffer.

That would make sense and actually makes sense in terms of physics as well but I was under the impression they were supposed to be similar action just a different length. So in that case, I'll suggest the 704C.

I don’t have a curado rod, I keep playing with them trying to find one that I can make use for or fill a niche nicely but just haven’t found it yet. They feel nice but the Sierra does feel better to me. The balance between the too is unmistakeable in favor of the Sierra. Like I said I haven’t fished a curado but do own a Sierra 734c. I wanted the champion but they were sold out. It is definately a medium heavy not s heavy rod! I would put it in the fast category though personally. Little on the slower side but not quiet moderate fast in my opinion. It isn’t a rod I use a ton, and is something I could part ways with but In General I am happy with it and do recommend looking towards the Sierra over the curado. Maybe I’ll find that curado that fills that niche or get to fish one and I’ll change my mind but for now I’ll stick with the sierra as my recommendation.
