Kalin's Grubs: Are the Lunker Grubs salt impregnated or is the salt only on the outside?

 

Goper Mushroom Jigheads: Are the Big John Jigheads too long for the 4 inch Kalin's Grubs?

Never seen a Kalin's grub with salt on the outside so I'm assuming they're all salt impregnated. 

 

Gopher is out of business as far as I'm aware. Last I heard guys weren't getting their orders for weeks and no answers to their calls or emails. A jighead with a 2/0 hook is pretty big for a 4" grub though.

A bit ironic and sad, isn't it?   Three or four years ago when many first learned of the 'Ned Rig', there was mad demand for mushroom heads and few suppliers out there.  Lots if people were looking for Gopher heads.  I know nothing about the company, but it appears that they made it to within an eyelash of explosive sales.

The Gopher "Big John" jighead works very well with 4" grubs.

*While there are other choices for Ned jig heads now - one feature of Gopher jig heads was having more lead weight which made up the bait keeper versus all the weight at the head only - gave a different glide pattern ...

... and I file most of that lead shank off the Big John jigs.

OK. So. I'm not a grub fisherman (yet), but I want to get into it for change of pace. You see, I'm hitting a particular river with the Ned for Smallies. As I've noticed the bite slow down a little bit, I picked up some Johnson Swimming Grubs and they were really good. Fished those for a few days until I lost the pack to snags and bent hooks. Went back to the Ned and it was better than ever. Coincidence? No idea, but I like the idea of showing them something different yet in some ways similar to keep a good bite going. 

 

In my research, I have decided on 4 inch Kalin's Grubs. My research also lead me to Gopher Big John heads, but if they're out of business, I won't bother. So what size hook is good for 3 inch and 4 inch grubs? I'll be using a 1/8 oz Jighead in the river current. There are several heads I like and I don't need input on that. Just really lost on hook size.

For 5" Kalin's grubs, I always used Owner 1/4 oz. ball heads.  I think it's a 3/0 hook on those.

I prefer a 1/0 hook for a 4" grub unless it has a huge body, which the Kalin's don't. A 2/0 would work fine I'm sure. I fish mine a lot on Table Rock around the cedars and hardwoods so a big hook isn't anything but a limb finder.
