Ballpark Frank Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Hey guys, I was just wondering how many yak bassers are on the BR. I like being in a big boat, but something about paddling a yak I love. I enjoy the quiet(most of the time it is) and the ability to get into some really skinny water. The only downfalls are less gear(could be a positive) and the distance I am able to cover. Sometimes on busy water, a yak can suck. Like when a fellow basser must fly by you at mach 1 when you have a lap full of lures, or the seadoos that forget other people are around and do donuts non-stop. Quote
Branuss04 Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I've fished from a kayak before. I was trout fishing, but always did it in the worst weather. 15-20 mph winds my first time out. It got annoying after awhile. After reeling in once, I would be 50 feet from where I started. Second time out, got caught in a storm on the opposite side of the lake. It was a long paddle back to saftey. I do tube though and love it. Like you said it lets you get into skinny water. Sometimes it's nice not having to deal with trailing a boat and what not. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 5, 2008 Super User Posted February 5, 2008 Nooo thanks! Quote
SimonSays Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I fish off an inflatable kayak, I like it cause it's compact and lets me get out on the water cheap =D I HATE getting blown around by wind as I can get blow away easiily, another thing....cranking deep cranks can drive your kaayak into ht enait eitself Quote
TeamBerettaGold Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I have done it a couple times for bass, my favorite is fishing for king salmon out of a yak. Set it up with rod holders, throw some spoons out and keep paddling! When you get bit hold on tight, a 4 year old king can pull you around like no bass i've ever caught. Quote
Ballpark Frank Posted February 5, 2008 Author Posted February 5, 2008 Yeah, some fish can actually be used as "water horses". Last year, I caught a 31# Blue Cat that pulled me around the lake for about 30 minutes. I didn't fight him at all, just keep the line tight and held on. Now that was yak fun!!! Quote
fooman Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I live by a great smallmouth river and bought 2 Old Town Otter XT's sit-ins last year.. The yak I use has 2 Roberts flush-mount removable rod holders in back for spare rods and 1 mounted in front..Since I'm river fishing theres not much tackle to take.. Keep tackle, camera and food in a dry bag and a gallon of water is all I need.. I put in and go down river and fish all day..when I'm done there are a few bridges I can take out at and then call for someone to pick me up.. I can fish all day and not see another person Quote
fooman Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Quote Yeah right, with my cooridination ;D ;D : Alot easier than you think...You would have to work real hard to tip mine over I bought my other yak for my 8 y/o daughter and my gf who's never been on the water in anything..8 y/o does great on the pond. GF,now thats another story, it took an hour to figure out what the foot braces were for, after that she was good.. Quote
tntitans21399 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I fish from a yak every now and then. I actually do better, more catches, from the yak then from a boat. I guess you can sneak up on them better. Quote
Super User David P Posted February 6, 2008 Super User Posted February 6, 2008 Quote Nooo thanks! Hahahaha, that's a crazy picture if that's real. I'd be so d**n scared! Quote
Yakangler Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 LOVE fishing from my yak..just started last year, but I'm an addict now. Can't beat the stealthy feeling of sneaking up on fish in the shallows and "skinny" water. Yea, sure is fun fightin the big fish in one of these. IMO, this is the best way to fish. Simple, quiet, and productive. Quote
armesjr Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I just got a tarpon 120, so i will be fishing from that now. Quote
Tenka Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I'm getting my kayak on Sunday, either a Hobie Revolution, or a Malibu X-Factor. I haven't decided. I'll be using it primarily for Yellowtail and White sea bass out here in San Diego, but it will hit some of the local lakes on a regular basis. Dave Quote
