Thinking About Fall Fishing

While loading the kayak this morning to come home, I caught a glimpse of Orion rising in the east. Fall transition is right around the corner.

Had a couple cool evenings this week...but guess there gone for now....sadness!!!!  Can't wait....favorite time of year.

Supposed to be in the mid-80's up here next week as well. 

However, I'll be fishing anyway.

This is going to be a different scenario for me this fall . The lake I frequent has huge of mats grass { skunk weed }all along the shoreline.  They use to keep it under control with grass carp . A good population  of bass has been shallow all year .  Buzzbaits and spinnerbaiits have dominated .The deep bite just never took off .I have caught some out   there with the seasons biggest at fifteen foot but shallow has been much more productive . I dont know how the fish will react when the weeds  turn  brown . Its going to be fun figuring them out .

Fall weather? I had to travel outside of Florida to see what real Fall weather looked like. It rarely drops below 40 degrees in South Florida and our weather is more similar to the Amazon than it is to the Great Lakes and other northern areas. The bass fishing is usually better in the ''fall'' and ''winter'' in South Florida so I am looking towards to bass fishing the next couple months.

We're slowly starting to cool down a bit here.  Five days of high temps around 95 then two days with highs in the 80's.

Same for me. Fall has always been one of my favorite times to fish. I have a feeling this year may be tricky, because of heavy weed growth and severe drought in our area.But I'm still looking forward to fall fishing

I don't really wanna think about fall fishing, it was pretty much suck last year. I didn't get a whole lot of bite but I did get my PB 7.7lbs. 

I got all my big swimbait set up ready tho and will start as soon as September come.

Can't wait!!!  It's a ways off for me but I get to mix in some pure, absolute fun fishing after the first frost and as an added bonus, I get to fill the freezer.  Double added bonus is that my daughter will go when the Papermouth bite turns on.

Down here the heat index will keep us in the low to mid 90's for the next month. But the waters should start to cool a few degrees and with that the bass start moving again. When it finally cools off in November we enter our winter rainy season and don't see much of the sun until March.

Yeah I hear ya there boss. In September I'm anticipating a few nice fish and in October on and around Columbus Day if conditions are fishable I've historically had good days. I've developed a habit of calling in sick that day. And if it was not a good fishing day it still was a great day.

Man , the weather has changed a lot in the past week . Fall may have arrived .Started out with super hot humid days ,  then a couple of heavy rains and cooler weather . Yesterday was a beautiful overcast day but did not know what to expect having about 6 inches of rain dumped in a week . The 200 acre lake was a couple of feet high  and clear . The day started out slow but once I got into a rhythm it was  steady . Number wise , about thirty , no lunkers  but 15 inch keepers were slamming the buzzbait .These fish were spread out . Back end of creeks , front of creeks , main lake flats . Covering water was   the key  . Caught 12 to 15 over the slot and only five under . Its been a long time since I caught that many over 15 inch bass on this lake . 

 

I removed the skirt from the lure and glued on a Shad colored Yum Money Minnow . The strikes were viscous . I may never fish with a skirt again .  The lure cast further and could be retrieved much slower .

I'm all for it as far as the temps go at least. I'm hoping to get out on the water at least once a week as the weather cools down. The only thing that keeps me off the water is the blistering summer sun and that dang howling wind. It's no fun being out on the lake on a kayak in some nasty 30mph winds.

 

I fish mainly Lake Perris as it's only a couple miles from my house. I did ok last year fishing from my kayak. I'm kind of at a disadvantage this year as the lakes water level is up 22ft. All the spots I found last year are now in the abyss. I don't think there's a bass alive in the lake that has seen the water level so high. I'd imagine they adapt pretty quickly but most likely are still somewhat confused and searching for new places to haunt and call home.

@kenmitchI used to live like 5 mins from Lake Perris, On Moreno Beach by the Golf course. I didn't do good before I moved out but I've heard behind Island still good and around dock by launch lamp(new flooding area). The guy from local forum who come fish with me, told me he caught a lot of 5-6# there.

Unfortunately fishing 'terminology' is anything but standard so I get the question.

For me, it's where a small(er) creek empties into a lake.

The presence of current, water temperature difference, bait, cover and the the proximity (or lack there of) of deep(er) water can all also play a role in an area's bass attracting / holding qualities. 

The size of the 'creek' can also affect this as well; usually bigger is better.

This lake has five coves 100 to 200 yards long coves , which are flooded creeks . The back of the creek would be the shallower area further from the main lake , the front of the creek is the area next to the main lake .

Scaleface, our weather has changed pretty fast too. All of a sudden were getting steady rainfall and temps dropping 8-10 degrees each day. The ponds near our house have risen a fair amount too. I think I'm gonna follow your lead here and cover more shallow water with a buzzer to start with then go back and fish creeks with worms/ jigs. It may be a decent fall after all.Lets just hope it last a while. We should be able to get some good shallow crank/ trap fishing too.

although it’s still hot and steamy here in NC, with swt’s in the low to mid 80’s, i have been finding spots and largemouth schooled up along with the bait, in coves, in 10-16 fow. and i mean LOTS of them. now this may be due to the thermocline, fall pattern or whatever, i dont care. when i start seeing them on the Garmin, i start casting, usually fan casting right out in the middle of the coves. you can catch them on a variety of lures til they get wise to you, then it’s time to move on. fish have also been busting on shad right in the middle of the day too. blue bird sky, no wind, whatever. loads of fun.
