Jim Sutter Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Is it OK to throw the Whopper Plopper when the water is not perfectly smooth? Quote
Happybeerbuzz Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Yes. The more choppy the larger the size I tend to use. 2 Quote
Jim Sutter Posted August 24, 2018 Author Posted August 24, 2018 Happybeerbuzz, Thank you for that information. Take care and have a wonderful and safe Friday. Quote
The Dogman Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 I mainly use the Whopper plopper when theres Chop on the water, when walking baits or not an option. Also rainy days it seems to work really well. 2 Quote
Dens228 Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 I've caught most of my Whopper Plopper bass when there's a slight chop. When the water is smooth I tend to reel it in 5 feet or so, slight pause, repeat. In those instances I get most strikes on the pause. Quote
craww Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 To echo whats been said that’s the time to use it in my opinion. There are only a few top waters that I like in Calm water. The plopper isnt one of them Quote
Jim Sutter Posted August 24, 2018 Author Posted August 24, 2018 The Dogman, Dens228 and craww, Thank you for your replies. Great information here. Please take care and have a wonderful and safe Friday. Quote
Dangerfield Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Some seem to think the WP is meant for choppy water, if the wind picks up, I'd tie one on. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 24, 2018 Super User Posted August 24, 2018 I love the WP on days where the water is choppy or it is raining. I also use it on calm days using it more like a popper. I cast it out, let the ripples die down, pull up the slack on my line and pull my rod back half a foot or so. The lure makes a short plop doing that. Wait for the ripples to die down and do it again. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 24, 2018 Global Moderator Posted August 24, 2018 I threw a 75 plopper for the first time yesterday in 15-20mph winds and caught a lot of fish. 1 Quote
Super User tcbass Posted August 24, 2018 Super User Posted August 24, 2018 I throw the Whopper Plopper in all conditions. Catches fish in them all. I like calm water and for me it seems to catch fish mostly in the first 5 feet if not the landing when it’s calm. Rarely do I catch on a stop and go so definitely different results for me. Quote
DSTN Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 I've had good luck with the WP 90 on calm days. I move up to the bigger sizes when there is some chop on the water. Sounds like the 75 size works on those days too. Quote
Jim Sutter Posted August 24, 2018 Author Posted August 24, 2018 Dangerfield, NYWayFarer, Bluebasser86, tcbass and DSTN, Thank you for your comments on when and how to throw the whopper Plopper. So much great information. I love it and appreciate it. Hope all of you have a great weekend. Quote

Always threw thew 110, I thought the 90 didn't run as well and the 130 was too big (felt like I was throwing a heavy musky lure all the time). However, I did pick up a WP 75 and really liked it. It ran well and got some bites. So my choices would be the 110 or 75. I think I will be throwing the 75 a lot now since it's one of the lightest but still runs great. Quote

Super User MassYak85 Posted August 24, 2018 Super User Posted August 24, 2018 I usually don't reach for my whopper plopper UNLESS it's choppy. The 130 size truly excels in rough water IMO as many other topwaters get "swallowed up" by the waves. A couple years back they upgraded the stock hooks to much beefier trebles. If you swap them out for a smaller size and lighter wire hook (I use ST-36s on mine), you can get the bait to sit a touch higher in the water which will help in the choppy water. 1 Quote
FishDewd Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 I only have the 90 size but all the fish I've caught on it have been along the bank on calm, semi-cloudy to sunny days. Never a hit in open water or when there's any chop at all. But likely my waters. Quote
RyneB Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 my best days on the Plopper are when it's a bit windy. If it's dead calm, I seem to do better on a buzzbait, spook, or popper if I'm targeting fish on top. 6 hours ago, tcbass said: Just a heads up, I do have Whopper Plopper 90s, 110s, and 130s. I can assure you the 130 isnt too big. The only thing it may be too big for is if you are limited to light equipment. I gave caught my fair share of 12 inch bass on it. 1 Quote

Yep, I don't want to use a heavier rod, so I stick with the 110's and under. Quote
