New Aldebaren

I was considering once black friday came around getting the new Aldebaren to make an ultra-finesse combo. What is the lowest practical weight that could be thrown? I know its rated down to a quater of an ounce, just wondering what the specs are compared to the actual functionality of the reel. Anything else that would persuade me to buy it would be helpful. ? Thanks!

The rod is going to help more than anything. You're going to need a specialty L or ML powered casting rod and 6-8lb line in order to get super light. But from what I've heard 1/8 and even 1/16oz is  obtainable with the proper rod.

I was thinking about the GLX 852C JWR. It's a nice light rod.

The 852 might be fine for 3/16, but you're going to most likely want a specialty JDM rod. The closest thing you might find from the states might be a Dobyns 702 or the Shimano Expride 7'2" BFS rod.

I saw that, I just thought the sensitivity may be worse than the GLX.

I looked at the 852c a while back and thought it was too light for senkos and med. jigs and went with the 803c instead. I liked the MH power better but it still feels light in hand. 

 

I also own a 6'6'' M G. Loomis Crankbait rod.  It is very similar in power to the 852 and it is a little light for anything deep.  The feel of this rod also influenced my decision.

I have an old model GLX 782 MBR and it has a crazy light tip. I have not tried anything lighter than a Trickworm at like 1\4oz but I feel like it could go lighter.  Not 1\16oz by any means, but it's a very light feeling rod. I think TackleTour did a review of the new vs old GLX but I can't find it for some reason.

What are you trying to achieve really, BFS, Weighless worm(trick/finesse)?

There are 3 version of aldebaran as of now, Aldebaran 50, Aldebaran MGL 30 and Aldebaran BFS. Which one do you plan to buy?

If you plan on 1/8 oz total weight any of these reel should be able too, just match with proper rod.

My goal is to be able to cast weightless finesse worm 4.7g/.17oz and Jr. Fluke 5.3g/.19oz and Husky Jerk 06 and I can achieve that with Daiwa SV105 and rod with 1/8oz with soft tip.

Picture with Zoom Jr. Fluke, 2/0 EWG hook, Daiwa Alpha SV105, Major Craft Go emotion 652L and a 3lb bass.

 

Ive been using this setup for the last few days and caught a handful of bass but mostly under 12" , Is this your goal, it fun to catch bass on light lure but majority of your catch would be pretty light too.

Yes, I was mainly thinking weightless/light drop shotting. The lightest finesse style

If you plan on just that, aldebaran 50 should be good to go. Now you have to find the rod with soft flex tip with lure rate 1/8oz and up.

My dropshot weight usually 3/16oz so I can pitch to target easier, never try 1/8 oz. 

With the weight plus plastic the total weight should be at least 1/4oz and Finesse worm plus hook also right around 3/16oz, so any rods with lure rate 1/8oz should be able to handle those just find.

I have a GLX MBR 842 and it heavens weightless 5 inch senkos very well. I have a Met MBL and very happy.   Have to believe the Aldebaron would be better
