I think it is mostly  for  smallmouth and we don't have many places in Va.  near  me  that have smallmouth  so I think I will give that style  up .

I would kindly disagree.  Works well on Lm Sm crappie, and I have been decent on trout.  I am sure there are more but these are the species that it has worked well for me.

Fredericksburg  and  only  have resvoirs to fish ,boat belongs to bother -in- law  so I have  no say  so 

 

when I have tried  it, everything seems to be like 3 ft. off bottom  but  no takers, maby I just need  to use  it more . tks for  help e1

and  do most of you call minnows shad ?cause everyone says throw shad colored baits but  we  have minnows ( lol ) in the resv"s here. just a thought.

No way!

 

Drop shotting in Virginia waters now is outstanding.

 

You can drop the rig straight down or cast it out.

 

Go with smaller finesse worms and work up to your trick worms and creature baits.

 

I note you are in Fredericksburg. You have access to some great rivers and One Fish Anna if you have a boat or kayak.

 

I am in Richmond and fish all over the eastern part of the state, sneaking out to SML from time to time and hitting Buggs and Gaston each year. Will be on the Rapp out of Hopyard Landing on September 3rd and then hit Buggs on September 23rd out of Rudd's Creek.

Drop shots can be very effective when targeting any species in the Black Bass family.

for largies down here (no smallies in my locale, sadly).

I've had a lot of success using dropshot for LM, I don't have any smallmouth at all where I fish.  I don't use it all the time, its the rod in the bottom of my rod locker.  If they aren't wanting to bite anything else I'm throwing, my last resort is the dropshot.  That said, it has saved me from getting skunked on several trips, especially right now with water being so hot down here.

I guess it would depend on whether you're getting bit or not.  Maybe it's just not the right presentation for where you like to fish.  I can catch many species on drop shot, but not if it's the wrong location.

I hope you give up that belief, because it is not true. Drop shot (ie, weight is placed  after the hook) and Carolina rig (ie, weight is placed before the hook) are universal and appeal to a myriad of species, and not exclusively bass. 

 

I have caught the following on it:

trout

blue gills

pumpkin seed

lmb

smb

perch

tilapiab

rock fish

rat fish

saltwater catfish

sierra

leeza

parrot fish

 

There are a whole bunch of other saltwater fish whose names I can’t recall. 

 

So yes, the drop shot is highly effective on smallies, but it is also effective for other species. 

 

I see no reason for you to give it up. Hope you don’t drop the drop shot from your tactical arsenal.

Thanks  everyone for your response you have convince me to keep trying  it, maby I  just need to take  my  time with it.i have been using the strike king dreamshot. I prob. just need more patience. Again thank you  all !
