I'm looking to purchase a high end jig and worm rod ill be fishing weightless senkos and 3/16-3/8 jigs and Texas rigs around moderate to heavy cover i fish the ca delta and a bunch of ponds that have moderate to heavy cover I'm looking at the nrx line of rods glx and megabass destroyer which rod In these rod lines will fish the baits above best

In my honest opinion, I’ve tried many brands but high end G. Loomis rods still set the standard for sensitivity. I don’t think you can go wrong with either the GLX or NRX. For what it’s worth, I have a few GLX and don’t really see a need to spend the extra money on an NRX

Consider talking with Mike at DVT about building a custom rod. He built THE PERFECT

weightless soft plastics rod for me.

X2. I am a self-professed G. Loomis fan boy (I own 2 NRX casting rods and a GLX spinning rod) but I had Mike at @Delaware Valley Tackle build me a casting rod for fishing a specific jig weight and I couldn't be happier. If I need another high-end bottom contact rod in the future I'll have Mike build me another one.

If you're going to lay down the $ for a high end rod you shouldn't have to settle or compromise on any detail.

I'm not I'm just curious on which model was intended for my uses

I would go with the NRX. There is a reason the NRX is the pinnacle of bottom contact techniques and I don't think G Loomis sells there blanks to builders anymore. The Megabass Destroyer lineup and GLX are impressive too. I wouldn't go for a custom unless you weren't satisfied with any production rods. There are so many great options. Other than maybe a K2, I don't think there is a blank available for a custom build that would beat the sensitivity of an NRX.

I know you said fishing weighless senkos and 3/16-3/8 oz jigs in moderate to heavy cover, but that is very broad use for one rod. You would like need two different rods for those applications from weightless senkos to jigs in cover.

Loomis blanks are not head and shoulders above other top blanks like they were when Gary pioneered graphite technology rods. In fact, the MHX blanks were designed specifically to fill the void when loomis cut off supply to custom builders. There are as good or better components to build with than any production rod and the attention to detail exceeds anything a factory is capable of.

While I do agree G Loomis was leaps ahead decades ago, under Shimano they are still at the top.

Personally, if I was going to buy a high end bottom contact jig rod, I would get the NRX or Megabass Destroyer but the NRX is the gold standard for a reason.

Everyone has the own preference, ultimately go with what you feel comfortable with and with the best warranty.

Huh, that is really interesting. I have a spinning rod built on an MHX blank and had noitced how much the taper felt like some of the MBR rods that I have.  I keep meaning to have a casting rod built on the same blank just for S&Gs, I might have to make it happen now.

For those weights I immediately thought you'd need the NRX 893c, but since you say moderate to heavy cover I'd say the 873crr would be a good fit.

Custom k2 736.  Sold my nrx 894 for it and have yet to regret it. Nrx blanks are nice but, for me, the balance, guides, reel seat, and handle were awful.

I disagree, a weightless t-rigged Senko weighs about ⅜ oz and you’d be putting it in just as heavy cover as a jig.

He never said what size senko. He could be throwing a 3 in, 4 in, 5 in, etc. Also, is he texas rigging them or wacky rigging them? A jig from 3/16 oz to 3/8 is a big difference regarding rod selection. The rod you would want for a 3/8 oz jig such as a NRX 893, NRX 873, NRX 854, etc depending on cover, would not be what I would want for a finesse jig around 3/16-1/4 oz. Thus, more information may be helpful

Here's what I will exactly be throwing on the rod I will be buying I will be fishing Texas riged 5-inch and 6-inch senkos around grass and tullies and wacky rig senkos 5-inch and 6-inch around Open Water. 3/16-3/8 oz T rigs and 1/4-3/8 jigs around moderate cover like rocks grass tullies and etc I fish alot of ponds and fish the California delta on my boat which has bug fish and alot of cover that the fish could get caught up in so my options are ether the 893c 854c or 873crr

NRX 873 CRR 7'3 - I have been slaying bass with texas rig on that.

It just a hoot to fish with :)

I think I will.  I need to thin the BFS herd a little first, but as I am the one dude out there who isn't in love with the CR721, I think a custom is my best option for a 6' finesse casting rod.

I went with an FMJ for my fancy jig rod, but the 873CRR was the runner up and I still wonder about it.  I wish I could have gotten my hands on one.

The NRX 893 would be tough to beat for those techniques. 894 is another one of my favorites, but it would struggle at the bottom of your range. I also enjoy fishing with the couple Destroyers I have, but they're not up to the level of the NRX IMO.

OP - if it’s going to be a production rod then the nrx and the new conquest rods are at the top. Newer glx isn’t a huge step down in sensitivity from the nrx either.  Personally, I’d have a custom built on a point blank or K2 rod blank. Hard to beat a rod that is designed from the blank up just for you.

i just want to say reading this forum years later is extremely painful ???? Everyone is arguing back and forth on whether he should go custom or not. Or arguing about which blank etc.... meanwhile i’m 11 comments in and not one person has bothered to actually answer the question... which was kinda easy to answer. Yeah sure having two rods would’ve been amazing but he said one rod so it’s up to him to choose between the 7’1” MH and the 7’1” H , unless he prefers 7’5”.... so the 854C would be my choice, many like the 894C , and the GLX 894C is a great model. I wish the 854 NRX was rated to 1oz instead of 3/4oz but lol this thread is fun to read.
