Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 While the buzzbait is a great choice for big bass, and after dark, what's most critical to his success is not the lure. It's the place, time, and sheer number of hours he dedicates to them. 3
NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 6, 2020 Posted April 6, 2020 While I do agree, time spent on the water and locations play a huge part, I have to think he specifically chose the buzzbait for a reason. If not he woulda just thrown a T-rig worm around for all his years. 1
Super User WRB Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 Trophy bass fishing isn't any different then any other type of bass fishing. 1. There isn't any magic panacea lures to catch bass. 2. There isn't any short cuts to catching bass. 3. The lure that works most consistanly is the lure you have confidence and skill in using. Pat Cullen fished in shallow natural or man made lakes with populations of big bass. Pat learned that big bass were more active and catchable after dark and discovered a lure that worked for him where he fished and fine tuned his presentation to suit his skills. Lunker Lure was 1 the 1st buzz bait for bass anglers, very popular in the 70's to 80's when Cullen was targeting big bass at night. I am always suspect when bass anglers start to market a specific lure. Why? Most bass anglers tend to be secretive about the lures they are using during the time they are effective. Today anglers can make money by promotion via the Internet UTube vedio's, in the past it was DVD's. Buzz baits with trailers like swimbaits or toads have become very popular agian. I have never caught a bass over 7 lbs on a buzz bait and spent a lot of time using them. The reason is I miss a lot of strikes on buzzers and developed little confidence using them. It's not that a buzz bait isn't a good lure, it isn't a good lure for me and that is counts. Tom 3

Although I 100% agree will @Paul Roberts that the enormous amount of time he spent fishing and the time of year (most of his DD bass were caught in summer) plays a huge part in his success I also know that he started out with the plastic worm and although he did eventually catch a DD on it he found that the buzzbait for whatever reason was way more effective for him. He states in his articles that after he finally gave up the worm and went to the buzzbait he began to catch a lot more big bass. I know plenty of big bass are caught on the worm so I'm not discrediting it all but for Pat it was the buzzbait. I think early on he would have been willing to try a Whopper Plopper, but later on when he had his system figured out to a science I think he would have been more reluctant. Even if there was better equipment out there, I believe his opinion was why fix what's not broken. He knew what he was using worked, and it was simple and budget friendly. 1
Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 Agreed... I'll adjust my statement... not just ANY lure though. 1
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 6, 2020 Super User Posted April 6, 2020 I'm not surprised that he was so successful with a buzzbait. It is a topwater presentation. I think limiting all your fishing time to nighttime in the areas he fished & using any effective topwater would produce a lot of DD fish. It's just a great way to catch pigs when they are the most venerable. 1
NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 @Paul Roberts- ?? I promise I mean no disrespect, just a friendly fishing discussion. I enjoy following you and watching your videos!

I enjoy following you and watching your videos! Not taken that way at all. Wish I'd put a smiley behind that quick reply. You made a very good point. Which could lead into an interesting discussion. But... I'm finally! headed out fishing this week. And... Dwight popped in with a much more concise response that I could have. :)) 20 hours ago, Dwight Hottle said: I'm not surprised that he was so successful with a buzzbait. It is a topwater presentation.
