My Buddy and I were fishing a tournament today.    We were fishing Hollow body frogs and trying to cast them long distance.  We started out fine, hadn't changed anything, then after a while, we both started having our braided lines bind on the cast.   Almost like a backlash.    This had happened to me a couple times before.   I am not sure what line I have on mine (I have too many to remember, I have to start recording this better) but my buddy has Suffix 832.    I messed around with some cast controls, and this seemed to help a little, but came back whenever I tried to really launch it.

Question is:  When braid gets wet for a while, does it have a tendency to bind like this?   Or is something else causing this?    I may try Power Pro on this set up to see if it works better.   Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!

If  both of you got snagged and tried to get it loose by putting your thumb on the spool and pulling, you dug the braid into the spool of line. This will result in what you're experiencing. I carry a 6" wooden dowel in the boat for snags when I'm using braid. Tie the end of the line to an object and walk the line off the reel until it's not dug in and reel it back on. When you get hung up, wrap the line around the dowel a couple of times and pull with the dowel, keeping the pressure off the spool. Hope this helps

Thanks looking 45.   The weird part is, we had checked that as well, pulling line out.   This was just weird.   We both have experience with numerous baitcasters.    I was just wondering if this had happened to others and if it was was settings that need adjusting after line gets wet for extended periods or something I hadn't heard of.   I have been considering a dowel or a thick glove for snag recovery.  Thanks for the reminder!!

I've never had that kind of problem even after fishing the same reel for hours.

To answer your question, no. I have seen this with guys that don’t spool the line tight. At the end of the day, I always make a long cast, put a glove on, and reel it tight. If your still having problems, it may be just easier to go with a bigger braid. Is it possible that you overthrowing it, using to much body???????

I do the same as @looking45.  I use a dowel for all snags with braid.  It's been my (limited) experience that braid under 40lb will dig like crazy if you put too much pressure on the line.  I have one baitcaster left with 20lb braid and once the season is over I won't spool braid on a baitcaster that is less than 40 or 50lb.

It is completely possible we were throwing too hard.   We were trying to reach back pockets through the slop.   I will also try taking it off and feeling it tighter.   Thanks Bull!

This was the first time it had happened to me as well.   That's why I am wondering what is going on.  It was really weird it happened to both of us on the same day.   We are going to keep looking into this.

Go by diameter, not line test......also rounder is better than flatter

Throwing too hard would never cause line dig. Actually, throwing hard resolves the issue as a strong enough cast will overcome line dig.

I have to ask, what # braid do you have spooled on? I’m going to guess 30# or less. As already mentioned earlier, line dig happens more the lighter the braid and you’ll most likely encounter it with 20# or less and depending on the braid, sometimes even 30# braid.

I keep forgetting bring a dowel so I wind up using my pliers. I carefully wrap the braid a few times around the outside of the jaws (pliers shut).

I do his whenever I try to free snagged lures regardless if the line. I always take my rod and reel out of the lure freeing equation because it practically reduces the chance of damaging rod and reel to zero. Well, unless you break it by stepping  on it, forgetting that you put your rig on the ground, lol.

Fishing Dad, don't know what size braid you are using, but a small diameter braid will do as what happened to you. I use 50lb Sufix 832 and it works fine.  You also may want to get your frog out with  side arm lob instead of a power overhead cast.  You will get good distance and you will not have to fight the braid behavior. I still use it on my frog rod, but gave it up for my other rigs for 10-20lb mono and 15lb Invizx because I just got tired of screwing with it on the water for my style of fishing.

100% correct....throwing hard won’t cause digging in, but to much shoulder can initiate a birds nest and at a minimum creates loose wraps, which then when reeled , allows the line to dig in.  Use the rod, not the shoulder.

Thanks everyone.   I am using 50 lb. braid.   Can't remember the brand.   I have been casting braid for over 10 years the same way.   I think my settings on the reel were a little off.    I just found it weird that it didn't happen either of the 3 times until I had been using it for a while.  This was weird.

Thanks everyone for the insights.   Has anyone used a thick leather glove to pull braid out of snags?   I might try that.

If it takes a while to happen, fatigue is setting in and you're starting to use your shoulder to cast more than the rod, especially trying to bomb casts. Brian.

That's interesting.   I never thought that would happen.  It does seem to happen both later in the day, and especially trying to bomb casts deep.   Does anyone know why that binds the braid.   It seems like the reel and line shouldn't know how the force is being applied.  If I would try to cast "smooth" it would hardly ever happen.   Of course I didn't get the cast as far in either.

Again, thanks for the insight.   This is really interesting me now.
