juandi824 Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 Caught a nice fish using a whopper plopper last week. Unfortunately no scale in hand. What do y’all think it weighs? This in fact is my PB. 6 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted August 11, 2018 Super User Posted August 11, 2018 Can't offer anything but a wild guess. Nice Bass either way. Congrats A-Jay 3 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted August 11, 2018 Super User Posted August 11, 2018 From this angle, I would say at least 2.8. ? Nice fish, thanks for sharing 3 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted August 11, 2018 Super User Posted August 11, 2018 Wild guess are fun. I would give you five as a give or take number but who really knows. Health has the largest factor in how much i weighs. Caught some 20" frame fish that were 5 and some that were 3 depending on the time of year and how good the food supply is. Now that it is the peak of summer should have been a good time considering they are at full power. Quote
FishDewd Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 10 pounder for sure! .... Actually I have to agree, from the angle I couldn't make a decent guess lol. But nice bass all the same! Quote

MichaelCopeland Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Hard to really tell from the angle. I'm guessing at least 4.5lbs. Could be as much as 5.5lbs or better. I always keep a scale handy. You never know when you might catch a new PB or even a state record for that matter. Heckuva Big Un though! Congratulations on your PB! ? Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 This is a decent chart for estimating largemouth weight, relative to length. I don't have a scale nor plan to own one so I use this to get a ballpark estimate. 1 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 12, 2018 Super User Posted August 12, 2018 Welcome aboard and congrats. Looks like a healthy, hefty bass, but impossible to tell her weight. Best I can guess is somewhere betw. 4-6 pounds. Here's another handy length guide. I read somewhere that these approximations differ based on what part of the US you live in. Quote
Super User burrows Posted August 12, 2018 Super User Posted August 12, 2018 Solid 5 could be heavier or just under but judging from the picture I would call it a 5... nice catch! Quote
Super User JustJames Posted August 12, 2018 Super User Posted August 12, 2018 Same weight as EGbassing's fish or maybe same fish. 2 1 1 Quote
Russ E Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 nice fish. I suggest carrying a scale or tape measure. I carry both. from my own experience, length of bass alone is not very accurate. to get an relatively accurate weight without a scale, you need a girth measurement also. then use a calculator like this one. there are several others on the net. https://www.garden-island.com/bass-weight-formula-calculator.htm in the last year I have caught: (these were all weighed and measured). 1: a 21 inch long 16 inch girth smallmouth that only weighed 4lb 7oz. 2: a 22 inch long 18 inch girth largemouth that weighed 6lb 4oz. . 3: a 22.5 inch long 19 inch girth largemouth that weighed 7lb.11oz. the 22 inch largemouth was the only fish that a length only chart was close. 1 1 Quote

NorthwestBasser Posted August 13, 2018 Posted August 13, 2018 I wouldn't rely on length/girth conversions. They may get you somewhat close... Sometimes. But I'm here to tell you depending on where you're fishing they can be highly inaccurate. Here in the PNW our bass are short and fat. My brother in law and I have weighed multiple fish on separate scales and then used conversion charts and "calculators" to see if there was a difference. Not once was the conversion accurate and a couple times was nearly a pound off + or -. Both scales were within .003+/- everytime. As for the fish in the pic, wild guess only... over 5. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 13, 2018 Super User Posted August 13, 2018 If you can fit your fist in it's mouth then it's a hawg. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted August 13, 2018 Super User Posted August 13, 2018 There's really no weigh (pun intended) of knowing. I caught a new PB Saturday. My previous was 6.75, a long thin fish with no gut. Saturday I caught what I thought was going to shatter that PB by more than a pound. It had monstrous bug eyes and a gut that looked like it ate two softballs. I was so excited my hands were shaking. It was only 6.92 lbs. Still a PB, but still not even 7 lbs. No pic because i didn't have my phone and I didn't want to kill the fish transporting it. I was kayaking, so no livewell. Had I stopped fishing then to go get a phone I would have missed the 5.2 pounder I caught 20 minutes later. The 6.92 lb looked twice the size of the 5.2 lb. My best day size-wise in...well, forever. On a side note, my wife said "Why didn't you call me? I would have brought you your phone or a camera. Oh, never mind." LOL. Nice fish and I'm guessing over 8, less than 10. That's the best i can do.
