Racheting Winch

I want to replace my DL 1400lb stock winch on my RangerTrail with a racheting type winch. Any suggestions as to brand or type? Thanks

I use a Fulton F2 on my new trailer as well.

Can someone explain some benefits of the Fulton F2? I get their dual gears and aluminum/plastic but do they offer something I’m missing?

Well for me they offer a winch that will survive the salty tidal environment I fish in. This may not sound sexy but they are a quality made workhorse of a winch. They just do a great job and look good too. The handle has several mounting holes to give you the option of choosing what fits and how much leverage you need. Also the handle can be mounted on either side, sometimes that matters.

 

Most factory trailers do not come with heavy duty enough winches or trailer dolly wheels in my opinion.  On my new trailer I upgraded both.  I also chose both sideboards (as the fenders had no carpet) and I added lighted trailer loading posts. I launch at night or early AM often and backing the trailer down the ramp will be much easier.

With the low gear you can winch a cabin cruiser up a cliff...slowly...but you can move a crazy amount of weight.

 

I'm exaggerating to make a point, but you get my drift.

I would relook at how I was loading my boat if I felt I needed to go to something like a ratchet winch because there's something wrong with the process.  Actually, on most boats, you would probably need to reinforce the bow loop/eye if you regularly put that much strain on it. 

I have loaded umpteen thousands of boats up to 22' over the past 60 years and can't say I've ever seen a need for anything other than a good rotary winch and don't even like cranking real hard on those.

 

fishncamp;  It looks like you sure didn't leave yourself much room between those tires and fenders on that trailer.  That looks like a recipe for a torn up tire, unless that boat was overloaded when you took that picture.  I would have to look at raising that fender a little.  I suspect if you looked at the underside of that finder, it would be tire rubbed.

The picture is not really that accurate. The outside edge is about two inches outside the tire and their is about 3 inches room above the tire. That is not a typical spring axle but rather a torsion axle.  It rides awesome,but thanks for your observation. As for overloaded the trailer is rated almost 600 pounds heavier than the original trailer from the factory.

After seeing the Fulton F2 on your boat, I ordered one for my Lowe last night, been thinking about getting one for a while. Had to get free shipping so I ordered some Boat Buckles along with it. ?
