RickD Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Looking for a step up in my baitcasting rod. I currently fish with St. Croix Mojo and Daiwa Tatula rods. Fishing is split between a 9' pontoon and back of the boat. Space is a little limited so I need a rod that is good for a couple things. I was looking at the Brent Ehler Tatula Elite MHF rod. Does any one out there have any experience with this rod or have any recommendations on something in that sub 200 price range. Quote
Mikeltee Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 I got the Ehler Finesse and love it. Its finish has much to be desired, but performance is on point. Id imagine the whole line is on point as an angler has his name on every one of them. I didn't have the pleasure of spending under $200 though. I think it was closer to $250. If you are looking for recommendations, please include the tasks at hand. If you are looking for an all purpose, why not just spend $100 on a Dobyns 734 or 705. Once you decide what type of presentation you are trying to achieve, invest more into that. Sensitivity is where the high end rods need love. Topwaters are visual bites so you can get by with <$100. It doesn't take much sensitivity to feel a change in vibration with a crankbait and I dont buy into to those "delayed reaction" rods. The guys spending $600 on rods will argue those statements though rightfully so... Quote
RickD Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 Thanks Mikeltee, 3/8 to 1/2oz Texas rigs and large shakey heads is what the main purpose of the rod would be. Would like to also double as a swim jig/spinner bait rod. I have a dedicated topwater rod and fully agree that sensitivity is not needed for that. Fish that on a Mojo 71MHF, I opted for that rod for it's action and weight. Should have mentioned weight of rod is important to me. I understand that we are talking tenths of ounce difference but with paddling/rowing all day I like casting to be as little work as possible. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 10, 2018 Super User Posted August 10, 2018 St. Croix Avid...... AVC66MF / 6’6” / Medium / Fast. Good for tight spaces and does just about anything. Quote
jtesch Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 I’ve got the Ehler 7’3” Multi purpose rod and love it. Really can fish multiple techniques with it. Different feel then the regular Tatula ( softer ) I think you could put a few of these in the boat and cover a lot of presentations Quote
MittenMouth Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 I just bought the skipping rod after a buddy convinced me. I found it for $153 on auction site plus there is a 15% coupon right now- $130 was tha final number. Quote
