jbmaine Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 Hi All, The back platform on my Lund swings up to gain access to the gas tank etc., and is held secure by two pins that go in holes on either side. I had it open a couple of days ago and didn't put the pins back in when I closed it. This A.M. I opened it up again and found this. It's a fine grained something that I have no idea what it could be. I've seen it once before this spring, the plug on the onboard battery charger, the slots for the spades had some in it but I didn't think much about it. Any guesses on what the blank it is. The gap in the pile in the pics is where I ran my finger thru. Thanks Quote
Super User Further North Posted August 8, 2018 Super User Posted August 8, 2018 Does it have a smell when it is dry? Does it dissolve in water? Does it have a smell when it is damp/wet? Can you describe how it feels? Can you get us a close up, zoomed in really tight? Quote
Super User Scott F Posted August 8, 2018 Super User Posted August 8, 2018 Looks like dried battery acid. 1 Quote

Super User Scott F Posted August 9, 2018 Super User Posted August 9, 2018 I'd only seen the photo while viewing on my phone earlier. Upon further inspection, it appears that the powder came from the hole in the riveted plate. Those pins that you removed, did they go into the hole in the picture? What's behind that plate? slonezp I think has it right. Foam that has been crushed to dust. Quote
Super User Further North Posted August 9, 2018 Super User Posted August 9, 2018 @Scott Fand @slonezp could be true...we need more info...it'll be good when @jbmaineanswers the questions I posted... Need to add another: Does the white stuff float, or sink in water? Quote
jbmaine Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 Ya, it could be crushed foam, it has no smell that I can detect, I know what battery acid is like and that's not it. Besides the cranking battery is a good 4 ft away. I haven't moved the boat so it can't be from vibration. We have Thunder storms tonight so I vacuumed it up before covering the boat back up. The pin goes in the hole ( Think barrel bolt ) It's really weird. It feels very lite. Can't tell if it floats, I cleaned it up before reading these posts. Quote

jbmaine Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 I recovered some of it out of the vacuum. It does float. I looked at it with a magnifying glass, and it is crushed foam. Not sure how it ended up like that and I'll keep an eye out for any more. Thanks for the help everyone. 1 Quote
Super User Further North Posted August 9, 2018 Super User Posted August 9, 2018 There you go. You can relax. Spilled and dried battery acid woulda made me nervous... Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted August 9, 2018 Super User Posted August 9, 2018 It's amusing to me the differences in how people perceive of or react to things. While I'd probably become concerned if blood started oozing from the walls of my boat, something like this is just "business as usual" for me. : ) 1 Quote

It's probably not a big deal, and I sure wouldn't get wrapped 'round the axle about it...but I'd sure check it out, just in case... Quote

PECo Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 I called the DEA and sent them to your house. Smuggler! 1 Quote

Just a little leftover from when they drilled the holes for the bracket, and/or from the pins rubbing when you put them back into place. Quote
