finatic Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 I'm thinking of trying out the ned rig. I've seen a lot about it and it seems to catch fish so I thought I would give it a try. I have a Field & Stream Tec-Spec Black 6' 6" Medium Fast rod (line wt. 6lb - 12lb, lure wt. 3/16 - 3/8) with a Pflueger President XT 3500 spinning reel. Would this be a good setup for fishing the ned rig? I'm hoping it would be then I wouldn't have to buy another rig. I have a big spool of 6lb Sufix Siege, would that be a good size line to use for this presentation? Quote
Super User Scott F Posted August 6, 2018 Super User Posted August 6, 2018 Of course you can use it. Be aware that to have the most success, very light, slow falling, presentations work better, than heavier jigs although there is no question the heavier jigs will still catch fish. For the lightest presentations, the rod you have won’t be the best tool for the job. Quote
Krux5506 Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 It should work fine and as you catch fish and get use to fishing a ned rig you'll probably make adjustments with your line or maybe end up wanting a different lighter rod. I found the ned rig to be extremely boring at first until I learned that it's a "less is better" fishing technique as in you really don't do much with the bait. Now I always have one tied on. Let it fall and watch the line, give it a pop or twitch to get it off the bottom. Once you get use to fishing it you'll find it's an addicting technique. Give it a try with the gear you have, the 6lb line will do fine and go for the 1/15 oz jigs. 1 Quote
tander Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 I think your rod is perfect. I use a Lews 6'6" med/f. I tried med/light but just didn't work for me. You just have to see what hookset you need to use. Mostly it is just lifting the rod and reeling fast. I use 10# test braid with 7# leader, you 6#test should be fine. I probably used the Ned rig at least 60% of the time. Just stick to the 1/15 oz heads and don't over work the bait. Quote
Mikeltee Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 You can fish a ned rig with a stick. Throw it out and let it hit bottom, shake it a little for 15sec, lift rod tip, reel in slack or wrap line around your stick. Repeat. Your rod choice will determine the sensitivity. It's best to use the lightest rod you feel comfortable with hauling your PB with. I got a medium light ugly stick elite for $40 and it works fine for ned rigging. I recently upgraded to a tatula elite ags finesse rod and guess what? It catches the same fish the ugly stick did. 2 1 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted August 7, 2018 Super User Posted August 7, 2018 It will work but if you want to upgrade, try a ML/XF rod and a 1/15oz jighead. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 7, 2018 Super User Posted August 7, 2018 12 hours ago, Mikeltee said: You can fish a ned rig with a stick. I agree! I throw the Ned on several setups, depending on where I fish. I used to fish it exclusively on a ML/F rod with a size 1500 reel until a 6-8lb channel cat took me and my kayak for a ride. This weekend I had only one rod with me, a MH/F casting rod. After fishing for an hour with no bites I switched to a Ned rig. I was fishing it from shore with 12# line. I caught a few Smallmouth Bass with no issues. Quote
finatic Posted August 24, 2018 Author Posted August 24, 2018 Finally got the ned rig (my local Dick's is carrying them now). Got it setup on the rig I mentioned in my first post along with the 6lb Sufix Seige. Took it out to one of my spots where normally I catch one or two fish, usually within a three to four hour time span. With the ned rig I caught four bass within the first twenty minutes I was there making me a definite believer in this bizarre looking little bait. 1 Quote
TBAG Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Yeah, it really is a great lure. Glad you're having success with it. I just got a Ned rig specific rod and reel so I can always have one tied on. I went with the Dobyns 702 and Shimano Nasci 2500. I probably spent too much when like someone else said a stick with a string will catch fish with the ned rig. But it should last me forever and maybe pass along to my kids. Quote
finatic Posted September 30, 2018 Author Posted September 30, 2018 Tried out the new NedlockZ jigheads yesterday (I got the 1/10 size). Using a Canadian Craw color I caught two 3lbs+ smallmouth and this gorgeous 5lb bass. It was a blast catching these fish. They faught like crazy (the smallmouth even leaped out of the water a good four feet) and then ran under the dock. I thought I was going to loose each one of them when they went under the dock, because I'm only using 6lb line (Sufix Seige), but I managed to get them out and the line held up to the abrasion remarkably well. The first jigheads I used were the original ones (Z-Man finesse shroom), but the first smallmouth bent the hook almost straight, so I thought I'd try the heavier gauge NedLockZ and they worked great. GeekOutdoors Posted October 5, 2018 Posted October 5, 2018 I'm using an HMG 6'9" ML/F with a size 1000 reel. My setup is Working good so far. I'm using 1/5 and 1/6 ned rig heads Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 5, 2018 Super User Posted October 5, 2018 Good setup, nice fish I use 5'9" and 6' rods for Ned, both M/F and MLF with 1000 size Stradics. Quote
