braid and spinnerbaits

    A few people here use baitcasters with braid for spinnerbaits. I thought that was a no-go. Those of you who do this, could you tell me the rod you're using, especially the speed/action/taper?  (I'm talking about 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits, not the miniature stuff.)  Thnx.    jj

I use braid on casting gear with spinnerbaits mostly because I fish them in fairly thick weeds, and it’s easier to rip them through. I use a 7’ medium heavy, fast rod and it works perfect for really ripping the spinnerbaits through the thick weeds.

 I Use either braid or Flouro depending on cover but always with a mh/f rod also. 

I use different rods of the same spec because of the different tapers

I use 30lb. braid on my spinnerbait set-up. 6:3.1 gearing on the baitcaster and a 6'6" med/mod.fast rod. The majority of the time I don't use a trailer hook and the softer tip on the rod allows the fish to suck the bait in easier.

  I had always been told that a MH/F rod would pull the hook right out of the fish's mouth. I'm thinking (just thinking, no more) of getting the St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'1" MH/F jigs & baits rod. For low-down, stop-and-go stuff, braid would be ideal. But it would be my only MH rod (My other one broke.) and I have 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits I'd like to use with it. Evidently, from what I'm hearing here, it would be OK. Surprising, but nice. (One of my friends told me I had to use fiberglass with spinnerbaits if I wanted to use braid. I .... dislike .... fiberglass.)     jj

I use the sufix 832 low-vis green. 10lb dia with 40lb strength. On 7"3 rod mh/ fast for ripping through the pads

I use it on a MH/Mod-fast St. Croix Bass X.  Never really understood the whole 'pulling the bait away from a fish' thing.

 

There must be something to it because so many people talk about it, but in my mind if a bass hits a spinner bait while it's moving, hammer it.

I use a 6'6" Veritas med fast with a 6-3-1 ratio reel spooled with 30lb 832.

If you use braid after fishing with a line that stretches, you have to adjust your hook sets. People who rip out the hooks from a fish are still setting hooks too hard.

Braid on a  7 foot, MH/Fast Bass Mojo.

I don't fish spinnerbaits with braid often, but a 7 ft MH that bends down about mid way down works well when I do.

I fish them on a 7' MH with braid/long fluoro leader. I don't know if that's weird or what in the bass world but I like it and I catch fish...well, sometimes.

   That may well be the source of all the advice I had been given. I think I'll take the plunge on a MH/F.  Thnx.   jj

No reason not to use braid for that. Landed a ten pounder a few days ago using braid with a spinnerbait. ?

I use flouro with spinnerbaits but braid with buzzbaits lol. I guess I’d braid works for one it should work for the other but I’ve always preferred a little stretch.

I use braid with leader for every single hook presentation.  (Trailer hook doesn't change it from a single hook lure, IMO.)

 

I use YZH for every treble hook presentation.

   Well, I just started. Bought 40 lb. Daiwa j-braid 'cause it was on sale. BIIIGGG mistake. I'll get some 832 today. The little casting time I actually did have so far with spinnerbaits was pretty positive, but I was in an area where I could acquire the fish easily. I'll tell you one thing; I feel the "  bump ... bump .." before the hit that I didn't feel before.  That's FUN!    jj

At risk of hijacking your thread....what was wrong with the J-Braid?  It has had my attention, but I have not bought any yet.

   It takes NO ... and I mean NO ...  abrasion. None at all. Over the years I've tried different braids on spinning gear, and I've never had any brand perform as poorly as this stuff. I fish rocky places way too often to use J-braid.    jj

 Interesting. Do you sometimes fish around rocks?  And is your J-braid 4-carrier or 8-carrier?

   The search engine here isn't the best. If I would have found this comment by iabass8 from 2014, I might have not had such unrealistically high expectations. And yes, I think they were unrealistically high.  Bad me. Bad, bad, bad me.
