EGbassing Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 Just bought my first scale. I got some of those rapala lip grippers and a $5.00 ozark trail scale. The scale is one of those that you set to zero with the knob on the outside. It's only accurate if you set it to about .5 pounds to start out with, but for 5 bucks, I'm not too disappointed. ? Edit: Well I just tried several different weights and it doesn't accurately weigh them.... Quote

Scales tell us our PB. Not everyone lives in the land of DD bass. Not everyone fishes for LMB. A SMB doesn't need to even be half of 10lbs to be incredible. 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 5, 2018 Super User Posted August 5, 2018 Congratulations! Everyone needs a scale so when we lie about the fish's weight we really know the truth. Now, save your pennies and dimes and purchase a small kitchen scale to weigh your baits and weights. I have one and it really is a blessing when I try to figure out the weight of my lead and tungsten weights plus my jigs and jigs/pigs. I do this to make sure the weight is within the rod's total weight limits and to reorganize my weights after I spill them on the floor. Be sure the scale can go as low as 1/8 of an ounce. Let us see some of your catches hanging on the new scale you just purchased. 1 Quote
YoTone Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 you can buy a digital scale(luggage scale) on ebay or amazon for around $10 and theyre very accurate. be prepared for a hard dose of reality when that monster you would of sworn to be 5 lbs turns out to be 3.8 lbs. 2 1 7 Quote
JG233 Posted August 5, 2018 Posted August 5, 2018 Caught a 5 LB'er today and I swore it was over 6 when I first hauled it out of the water. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 I have both a spring scale and a digital luggage scale. Both are very accurate, but the spring scale isn't as reliable for smaller fish. I rarely, however, weigh fish preferring to just get a quick measurement and release. 2 Quote
moguy1973 Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 There was a thread not long ago about fishing scales and these were in that thread. I bought two because they were cost around the same price as buying a new set of batteries for my old Berkley scale. If one gets wet I have a backup. They are extremely accurate also and run off a single AAA battery. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Pocket-Digital-Fish-Hook-Luggage-Hanging-Weighing-Balance-Scale-US-SHIP/201182154407?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 1 Quote

Amazingly accurate and have been pretty durable. They don't like getting wet, but they've come back to life every time after taking them apart and allowing them to dry if dunked. Quote

You forgot to factor in the new law of diminishing size applied to anyone who hooks into a fish... the closer your hooked bass gets to you, the smaller it gets. I think it is an arithmetic in nature as opposed to being geometric and it is divided by the inverse of the square root of Planck’s constant. 1 Quote
Super User deep Posted August 7, 2018 Super User Posted August 7, 2018 So I learnt today that: 1. A 6-pack of beer (cans not glass bottles) weighs roughly 4 lbs 13.5 ozs and that 2. My old Berkley digital with a 2 year old battery is still super accurate. Quote

MichaelCopeland Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 I had one of those $5 Ozark Trail scales. It wouldn't even register a fish that was 3lbs or better. I eventually got an Ozark Trail digital scale. It's accurate up to -5 to +5 grams of the actual weight. Works for me for now anyways. That $5 one, though, is a piece of junk! It says it will weigh up to 50lbs. I think the fish would have to weigh 50lbs before that thing would register it...lol. ? Quote

If you still have that scale, you should try some different starting weights. You know that knob that you use to set it to zero? Just try turning it up/down and see if that helps. I started mine right on zero and it was way off, but this morning I tried moving it up a little and it's actually pretty accurate. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted August 7, 2018 Super User Posted August 7, 2018 I have this, it seems to be fairly accurate and it fits in my pocket. https://www.amazon.com/Rapala-Mini-Digital-Scale-25lb/dp/B006W9LB88/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1533653167&sr=8-11&keywords=rapala+scale#customerReviews Quote
MrFrost Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 I tried this guy... Cheap Amazon Scale This one has a lot of awesome reviews, and I think for the most part, it's probably a great scale. I had mine quit on me after a fish that did not want to be weighed apparently would not stop shaking. Couldn't get the weight to lock in, and as I was about to take him off, he stopped moving and I noticed the scale was off, and would not turn back on. Tried new batteries on my way home, and couldn't get it to turn back on. I think based on the reviews, I just got a dud, as most people don't have any issues. So now I have this one. Rapala High Contrast Digital Scale It weighs fish, and it's super convenient that it uses a gripper. I much prefer that method. Quote
