Super User NorcalBassin Posted August 5, 2018 Super User Posted August 5, 2018 Not sure if it's getting much national attention, but NorCal is getting absolutely hammered by wildfires right now. We started with the Ferguson Fire south of us just outside of Yosemite 3 weeks ago, and it's still burning strong at 90,000 acres and 35% containment with spot fires leading to more and more evacuations. The Carr Fire right next to Redding took off like a freight train and pretty much destroyed all of Whiskeytown Reservoir's shoreline just southwest of Shasta Lake. It's now burned 155,000 acres with 41% containment (fortunately they stopped the spread toward Redding). As of this morning 7 people have been killed due to the fire and nearly 2000 residences and structures have been destroyed. The area around Clear Lake is currently getting destroyed by the River and Ranch Fires (Mendocino Complex). The River Fire started off strong and resulted in the entire town of Lakeport being evacuated for a few days, but fortunately they stopped the forward spread before it reached town. However, the Ranch Fire that was burning somewhat quietly nearby has exploded in size the past few days and is now around 210,000 acres with decreasing containment (now 23%). The entire north shore of Clear Lake is now under mandatory evacuation. Closer to home we recently had a fire start in the high country east of us that is a couple thousand acres with zero containment and burning through some of our favorite camping areas and trout streams. Just this morning we had another fire pop up in a canyon by New Melones and with resources so scarce we're hoping they can at least get a DC-10 or some choppers on it before it takes off out of control. Crazy times and thoughts and prayers to all the firefighters that are putting their lives on the line. View from the front yard... you can usually see ridgelines miles away and the visibility is down to about 1/4 mile due to all the smoke If you have a few minutes and want to watch how incredible the guys are on the frontlines this is an amazing video from Clear Lake yesterday. Insane how quickly the fire spreads. https://www.pscp.tv/EPN564/1yoJMVDZmRoxQ 6 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 5, 2018 Super User Posted August 5, 2018 It's been all over CNN, etc. I've been following. Just awful stuff y'all are fighting there. I hope you and yours stay safe and out of harms' way. Including homes and belongings. What you guys need is a good week of steady rains. The fire fighters all need a good rest. Brave men and women not just fighting flames but exhaustion as well!! Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted August 6, 2018 Super User Posted August 6, 2018 Hope you all get some water soon...... Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted August 6, 2018 Global Moderator Posted August 6, 2018 It's been on the news here in Michigan. The Michigan DNR just sent some of their forest fire personnel out to California to help. Rain would be good but too much would create mud slides, so a hopefully you guys get just the right amount.
