Good afternoon!

In my area, the popper has become one of those lures that everyone has, and forgot about.  I throw the Rebel Pop-R with a lot of success.  Easy to find, affordable, and I can walk one pretty well.  I swap the hooks and I'm good to go.  I might be against the norm, but on sunny summer days it flat out gets bit for me on grass lines and breaks.

That being said, I can't find any with a dark belly.  I'm from a school of thought that the dark color helps with contrast against the sun, making the silouett easier to see.

What are some of your favorite popper style baits that I could find with a black underside?  Or is there a Rebel color that I haven't found, yet?

Thanks!

I too throw poppers in the middle of the day with plenty of sun. Personally, I think they are more attracted to the sound and action, than actual color, but if you want black Lobina Rico in Volt. Expensive popper, but I rarely lose poppers so I don't mind spending a bit more when I know they'll catch. My favorite popper is the Evergreen OB Magic Gill though, it will catch in all kinds of conditions.

I just recently started using the Storm Arashi Cover Pop.  It's a great popper that is super easy to get to walk and pop

Megabass PopMax has been my favorite.  It's super easy to walk like a spook, or use as a traditional popper.  The paint jobs are magnificent, and have held up to plenty of toothy pike.  It's expensive, but gets a 10/10 rating from me.  It's the most dynamic topwater I've used.

Arbogast makes a good old fashion all black Hula Popper with a black and yellow tail.

LunkerHunt makes a sweet little popper. I believe it’s called a Kraken or something like that. Easy to walk, cast and it has a feather tail treble. The price tag won’t give you sticker shock either.  Some WalMarts carry them.

Megabass has a few patterns for the Pop Max and Pop X that have a dark or black bottom, and they are both excellent, highly productive baits. And like @NYWayfarer mentioned, the classic Arbogast Hula Popper comes in all black.

Rapala Skitterpop. Balsa construction, hard plastic scooped lip with a feathered treble. Still wish they wouldn't have discontinued the chartruse backed model. That color used to be deadly on river bass.

I use this popper but they have limited colors. The OP is looking for one with a dark or black bottom. The Kraken popper doesn't have one like that unfortunately.

I've had good luck working a pop-r across submerged vegetation that is maybe a foot under the surface.  About the only color I use is the black back/chrome/white belly.

Is there a trick to getting the sharpie to stick?!  I've colored blades on chatterbaits, double coated them, let them sit over night, and I can't make it last!

Clean with denatured alcohol so there isn't oily residue. You can spray with black Krylon for permeate finish.

Rebel did make an exclusive lure for BASS members that is solid black. The color is listed as spilled ink. I’ve came across them for sale on flea bay a few times. Not easy to find but they do catch em’.

Lobina Rico are great poppers and walk nicely. My best producing popper is a Lake Fork Magic popper. I believe they are discontinued, but I have found a few on ebay. The stock hooks are complete trash, so it isnt tun having to put new hooks on such a pricey bait, but it flat out catches fish.

There are a lot of good poppers on the market; I like the Storm Chug bugs and also Hula Poppers. As for poppers in black ....I used black nail polish to darken the belly of poppers if I don't have any in black. It's a tip I read in BASS over 20 years ago. It seems to hold well but does leave a subtle odor the first 24 hours.

I also like Chug bugs. Easy to pop and walk and they have a black with red stripes version.  I've also found an all black popper with red eyes in one of those bargain bins at Walmart.  Might have been Cotton Cordell.

I’ve been getting tons of bites on the Arashi cover pop. Easy to walk, can either make a ton of commotion or very little, depending on what I need.

I wish they’d make a slightly smaller size, though. I fish a lot of ponds, and the fish in them tend to prefer a smaller profile. I’ve tossed this little 1 inch popper I got from Cabela’s for $1.50 and it’s usually bit by the time the rings are gone.

I'm a big Lunkerhunt fan. Initial success has me going back to their poppers time and time again. Great action and sound. Nothing like an explosive hit on the cast landing.

Go into any hobby shop and grab a small pot of Matt black and a clear coat. Buiild lots of tabke top models and they take a beating so I can tell you the paints are resilient.

Just paint it black. Cheap fix.

I see a popper and I want to paint it black...
