Had a wild one last night. I left the boat home and was fishing a big pond I have access to. I was bringing in the worm for the next cast and it got wrapped up on a little shrub by the water. I go to get it and while I was working it loose I felt what felt like a briar or thorn jabbing me. I looked down and saw about a dozen bees crawling on my jeans. I drop everything and run down the dam fast as I can while swinging my cap at all of them. Had to be a sight but nobody else was there.

So once I get down about 50 yards, I killed one more than hung on for the ride. I check everywhere I can and then regroup because I have to go back get my 3 rods and tackle. I wait about 10 mins and head back. I get the two rods on the ground and the tackle bag away from the scene. Now time to get my hung up rod. I creep up and flip the bail and walk off about 20 feet and start pulling. The bees came out of the ground and started attacking my Zoom worm in the shrub. I cut the line and took off. I've had a lot of crazy stuff happen while fishing but never with that many bees.

Anybody got any similar stories?

When I lived in Florida I thought it was fun teasing a small gator with my buzzbait.  Right up until it decided to follow it into my boat!!

I've got a buddy who was fishing out of his kayak in a spot

we would frequent. He was alone. His back was to the bank

casting out onto a flat.

Wind picked up and blew him into the large overhang bush

which was home to a lovely, camo'd wasp nest.

He quickly capsized to get away from the angry wasps, lost

quite a bit of stuff that day.

As I was running down the dam, I thought of jumping in. If I'd kept getting stung I would've.

yellow jackets I'm guessing? this time of the year they are pretty common. be extra careful with your pets. dogs will bite them, natural instinct. their throats can swell up dangerously. warn your kids too. they can nest in ground, in swing sets,  just about anywhere.

Might be a good idea to keep Benadryl handy for your pets

Not yellow jackets, I think they were ground nesting bees (miner bees) which look like honeybees but are supposed to be docile from what I read. Apparently these bees read different articles.

I ran into a ground nest once at work while locating in some tall weeds so I saw nothing. By the time it was all said and done I had been stung 10 times on my neck, arms, and head. Called the contractor told them the situation and said you're on your own, dig careful. Some of those stings hurts for almost a week.

When I was in my twenties I was fishing the Ocklawaha river with a girlfriend. All of a sudden she yells "Duck " !!

Being the smart individual I am, I said " Where ? " She screams " DUCK NOW "!!! So I did , just in time to go under a big nest of hornets on a cypress tree limb. Glad I had been pretty good to her up to that point, or there might have been no warning !?

As a stonemason and stainless steel chimney/wood stove installer, I’m often up on roofs or in attics working on older chimneys. Wasps and hornets absolutely love to get up under the chimney flashing and create nests, which are always right where I need to tear it down. I’m sure there’s been a few times where customers neighbors have wondered why there’s a crazy person on the roof with a full zipped up rain suit on when it’s sunny and 90 degrees outside ?

I worked for a utility company installing and maintaining underground lines. We were putting in a new subdivision and I had a nature call, #2. No houses and anything else around, I hit the woods. Drop my pants and whites, made the squat and felt something stinging. Of all the places in the wood to choose from, I choose to squat on a yellow jacket nest in the ground. Of course I started running with my pants down and whites down (hard to run with pants and whites down). Finally made it back to the paved road. The road was of course higher than ground which made me fall down (pants and whites still down) tripped and skinned both knees. Glad nobody was around to see me, ended up with 2 skinned knees and 3 bites on the rear end. Not my best of days.

Hahahahaha. Legendary story. That story made my day already. Definitely a story you can tell and laugh about looking back for many years to come. Dang yellow jackets haha. Trust me they have torched just about everyone. I make sure to get my revenge every chance I can haha.

About 10 years ago I was fishing a spinnerbait around an island.  I made a cast past the island and threw over a tree branch.  I tried to flip the spinnerbait up over the branch, but it got tangled up.  After a couple of pulls I figure I'm going to have to go get my bait.

I'm about 30 ft away and I start hearing buzzing, and I see the tree branch I was hung on had a hornet nest built on it.  No way I'm getting closer, so I moved the boat over the opposite side and luckily the spinnerbait pulled free.

Yeah, I don't play with Hornets. Got stung 3 times in the head at a company picnic by them years ago. Hornets nest was right by the volleyball court that nobody saw. Felt like crap for about a full day.

Sounds like ground hornets. I stepped on a nest night fishing one time. Thought I got shot or bit by a copperhead or something when those first couple hit my ankle and back of my calf.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more scary in the woods than bees. I mean, how often do you get bit by a rattlesnake or mauled by a bear?
