Brian Kristen Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 I live on a 15 acre private lake, a few nights ago I was bass fishing at night from the bank. I was throwing a Bigfoot topwater frog along the edge of the bank and a owl came down and grabbed my frog and took off with it, i jerked it away from it when it was about 15 feet off the ground, so i immediately casted in the same spot and it came down and grabbed it again and took off over the water this time, it got about 20 foot in the air and about 50 foot from me when i jerked it this time it snapped my line and the owl dropped my frog in the middle of the lake. I was wondering if anyone has ever had this happen to them, i haven't ever heard of anyone nor has anything even clise to this ever happened to me. 1 4 Quote
PECo Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 If you’ve ever fished a topwater or very shallow running lure from an ocean beach, you’ve had birds go after it. I love fishing walking lures, but once the sun comes up and the birds take to the sky, forget about it. I’ve caught seagulls, terns, pelicans and various little shore birds. They’re a pain in the butt to untangle and unhook. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 1, 2018 Global Moderator Posted August 1, 2018 I caught a big owl night fishing with Jitterbug, not a good time. 3 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted August 1, 2018 Super User Posted August 1, 2018 No owl yet, but I've had ospreys, eagles, seagulls, pelicans, terns and bats take or try to take my lures over the years. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 1, 2018 Global Moderator Posted August 1, 2018 Had an osprey take a bomber long A and strip a bunch of line and snap it Saturday morning. Luckily I think the recoil busted my lure loose and I found it floating with a bunch of line 5 minutes later 2 Quote
Brew City Bass Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 It's not owl's for me but seagulls and hawks. I've lost close to 10 lures in the past 5 years to them. It's never even topwater lures either, always spinnerbaits or swimbaits. Out of fear of hooking the bird I always just cut the line and say a prayer those dummies don't eat it. 3 Quote
Super User Koz Posted August 1, 2018 Super User Posted August 1, 2018 I've had a big red tailed hawk grab a Whopper Plopper 130. Good times. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 1, 2018 Super User Posted August 1, 2018 One night at Housen' Bay Marina Pat and I were talking while grilling steaks outside, Steve was trying to get a backlash out of one of his reels. After reeling in his line Steve made an underhanded cast to check out his work and immediately went on point like he was going to set hook. Puzzled Pat and I looked at each other then back at Steve who had reeled in and cast again. Turning towards us Steve states some thing bite my jig, Pat and I bust out laughing, Steve says no seriously. Reeling in and casting he says there it is again, this time Pat and I both see his line move. Gabbing a flash light sure enough there is a big ole owl with Steve's jug in it's mouth. Pat and I bust out laughing and shout dude don't set hook! 5 Quote
MichaelCopeland Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Closest thing I've had to that is throwing a frog in a pond that has lots of ducks swimming around. I don't cast near them, but they see it out there and swim towards it. So far I've been able to get it reeled in before they could get to it. I don't fish there much anymore as I have yet to catch anything there. They say there's bass in there, but that's yet to be seen. Plenty of ducks, geese, catfish and bream though. ? 2 Quote

EGbassing Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Never any birds, but I've had hundreds of turtles attack my topwaters. Never hooked one before somehow... Edit: are you sure it was an owl? Could have been a flying bigfoot. Quote

Never hooked one before somehow... I had a big painter turtle come up from underneath and hit a topwater treble hook. He was hooked GOOD and it took me probably almost 30 minutes to get the hook out. He kept ducking his head into his shell. Not wanting to hurt him, it became a fairly gentle game of tug of war until he tired and I could get the hook out. I had never realized how strong turtles were until that episode. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 1, 2018 Super User Posted August 1, 2018 I haven't had a bird attack my lure but I have hit birds twice while casting a lure. They were flying by as I started my cast and the lure hit them in mid-flight. 1 Quote

As I said up there, I've never had one actually eat my lure, but I snagged one recently on a red eye shad and that stupid thing would not stop trying to bite me. I realized after I got the hook out and released it that I had been yelling at it for biting me. ? Quote
scbassin Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 My partner & I keep a towel in the boat so when we hook a sea gull when casting topwater baits for schooling fish. We cover the bird with the towel as it tends to calm them & it's easier to get the hook out. Quote
buzzbaiter83 Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 I’ve had cranes grab my buzzbait at night. No fun to try and get off. Had a raccoon try to grab it one night. Thought it was gonna climb in my boat with me. I had a friend accidentally foul hook a beaver on a spinnerbait at dusk once. The fight lasted a couple seconds. lol Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted August 2, 2018 Super User Posted August 2, 2018 I had an owl get tangled up in my line one night out back when I had a live shiner on. I cant figure out how it happened, because I had gone inside so I didnt see it. He had flown up in a bush with the line. When I reeled in the line was UP in the bush, not down in the water. Imagine my suprise when I pulled back the branches and an owl was sitting there staring at me. Unfortunately I could not reach the owl, so I cut the line. He seemed to be ok and was gone next morning so...hope He's ok Also had a hawk swoop down and attack a frog as it was dangling just before I cast.I immediately hit free spool and he let go. Quote
